Four deck park projects in the Dallas area designed to reconnect neighborhoods divided by highways and increase green space in the city will get a boost from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act.

United States Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Mayor Eric Johnson and other elected officials gathered Thursday at the site of Southern Gateway Park to celebrate $80 million in federal funding awards announced last month. Part of the funds — $25 million — will go toward completing the second phase of the park from Lancaster Avenue to Marsalis Avenue over Interstate 35E near the Dallas Zoo. The funds also include $20 million for three pedestrian caps at Interstate 30 near the Dallas Farmers Market that will reconnect the Cedars neighborhood to downtown; $20 million to extend an existing pedestrian deck park at Klyde Warren Park 1.7 miles west, and $15 million for an inverted pedestrian deck at State Highway 5 in McKinney.

“Dallas is a city where modern skyscrapers and bustling urban hubs thrive alongside very historic neighborhoods like the one right around here, and serene green spaces like the one that we’re creating right here,” Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said Thursday. “This grant is going to help fund projects that will bridge the gaps that have long divided our communities and will ensure that every resident in Dallas has access to the natural beauty of our parks and the economic opportunity that our city has to offer.”

Buttigieg acknowledged that the 20th-century highway system, while providing essential infrastructure, had an outsize impact on existing neighborhoods in southern Dallas like Oak Cliff.

From the DMN article - I wonder what an inverted pedestrian deck looks like

It was presented by the city a while back. They have an illustration, although it's not super clear to me.

The option entails a grade-separated "inverted deck park" with SH 5 at ground level and the park dipping underneath the roadway to connect both sides. The option was inspired by the concept of "rings" and Galaxy Soho Plaza in Beijing...

Same. It’s good to know that the Southern Gateway Park will be done before the World Cup. It will be interesting to see what kind of impact it will have on the surrounding neighborhood. I know developers already bought up properties around the Park in Oak Cliff.
