Water Treatment Plant Fined $35,000 Due to Odors (Columbus, Dayton: to live in, air quality)

Hi all--

Got this while rooting around on the Dayton Daily's website today:

Clean Water Limited Fined $35,000

Yes, they were very receptive (to what we said), said RAPCA president John Paul. “They have agreed to pay the penalty and agreed on the orders and the different measures going forward.”At issue are odors coming from the facility, one of three owned by CWI (the others are in Columbus and Mansfield). Residents have complained for years about odors coming fromthe operation on Cherokee Street.



Several tests conducted over the years have indicated air quality surrounding the facility meet EPA standards, but foul odors can be detected on several nearby streets.

In my experience, I've noticed that the smell goes a LOT further than "several nearby streets" away. If the wind blows the wrong way, all of Moraine, West Carrollton, and/or Downtown will have that odor in the air. I do wonder if the relatively small fine - $35,000 - is enough to encourage the business to clean up its act?

It certainly has been a long standing problem. I drive to Cinci and back 3 or 4 times a month and lately I have noticed a strong stench up on 75. I would hate to live in the area.
