Hi,

Looking for my own place. I would like to live in downtown or really close to downtown. The place needs to allow small dogs (just one). My budget is $500 or less. I know that's not much (cancels out places like the Cannery/Lofts/etc), but that's my limit, unless utilities are paid for.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, every place I know of in Grafton only allows cats.

I heard Pepzee allows pets, so you can maybe try these:

604 - 606 West Grand - 1 Bdrm

I know this is a bit further, but this is right by my house so I can vouch for the building and neighborhood: 302 Fountain Avenue

^And you just received your best advice right there. Grand is a very nice street, I'd definitely give that complex a close look.

Otherwise, maybe try one of the apartments along Riverview Ave? Not sure about safety, problems, etc. but there's a lot of units along there.

Maybe do some walking and check out some "for rent" signs in the Oregon District. I could be completely wrong, but I get the impression that some of that apartment rental stock really isn't publicly advertised well because there is enough foot traffic in the area.

Under $500 in the Oregon? You'll notice the place because it'll have a unicorn in the parking spot.

I'm talking about the mixed use buildings. The ones with upstairs apartments above the commercial shops; they don't strike me as being expensive, but I may be wrong. Other than that, I agree, the OD is not cheap.

I don't even think they advertise those--it's like the mixed use apartments in Yellow Springs, you have to know somebody to get in.

In the most desirable areas, cheaper rent can be had by settling for less space. The coolest student housing I ever had was tiny, but allowed me to walk out my door to great amenities.

Also, the "do some walking" advice from Joe is also the best. In the above-mentioned area, landlords never needed to put up with all the cranks calling up about something they 'saw' from 1,000 miles away in some classified.

I'd also add to the "walking" bit, some talking. Look for people out and about and ask if they know about stuff and what they think of the neighborhood. If the area stinks and is full of meth-heads, they'll openly talk about it.

Great point. I think you're right, and Joe is right. If you have the time, definitely do this.

Suburbs. You really don't want to have to deal with the idiocy in the area.
