Like a lot of people I'm attracted to SD for lower tax reasons, especially on your house, and I researched it somewhat to see they do have some hospitals and primary care doctors, but whats healthcare really like for doctor waits specialty care etc ... ??? Can someone chime in that moved/retired there from another state? I live near Annapolis now and have higher taxes but my pick of doctor care. I'm trying to get a real feel for the differences.

DH and are here 4 3/4 years from Long Island, NY. We have not had a problem with either Dr.'s or dentists. Hubby has a wonderful cardiologist and Dermatologist. Now I can honestly say that many have had a long wait for a primary care that they want and many do not take new patients. The only hospital (thinking emergency as opposed to a planned reason) is Beebe. I know people that have had wonderful experiences and people that will say that they survived Beebe despite itself.

I will say that I do think part of the "problem" with Beebe is that people don't give it a chance. Before anyone says it, I know that you have only one life and to play a game of chance is foolish. What I mean is that if the opportunity presents itself, many of us have moved from metropolitan areas like, Long Island, NYC, Philly, Baltimore, Annapolis, Or Boston to name a few, and often head back there to the doctors they are most familiar with so the "locals" don't ever have an opportunity to truly shine, so I am not sure how that is overcome.

I have heard wonderful things about Christiana and Bay Health in Kent County and there is a new hospital opening in 2019 in Milford, Bay Health of Sussex County, but if you are living in the beach area, that is still a drive of about a half hour in no traffic.

I have lived here for years. Our family Doctor had moved down here and we were one of his first patients WARNING THIS IS AN ACTUAL HISTORY AND NOT PLEASANT>. He retired and we had a problem getting with a new Doctor. The Doctor we finally get up with I found out is not a BeBee Doctor and cat not admit or order treatments. From our lives in Pa I had no idea of this policy. Onceyou are released from the hospita l getting up with a Specialist is VERY HARD and time consuming.I was diagnosed with a severe Sodium deficience.Which in itself can be fatal and is generally caused by a tumor..As it progressed my family Doctor could not even consult with the Doctors who treated me in the hospital. I have heard him on the phone trying .Ended upas he tried he prescribed too much sodium. I could have met with a specialist from Nanticoke easily. How ever since our ambulance is in an area were BEBee is the only Hospital they will go to I was afraid of being taken there again with treatment from another hospital, Long, long story my family Doctor finallly was able to arrange an appointment with a Bebe Doctor. First appointment she was able to issolate the problem andthingsprogressed quickly. I am now a patient Of Tunnell Cancer Center Had I been able to get this test quickly when the problem became obvious in July. I might have a much better chance of survival as undiagnoded small cell cancer spreads. I would not moved into an area where BeBee is the only option. In hospital care was always excelllent but once you are released you are on your own..

I am guessing what longneckone is referring to is the newer concept in hospitals of having to work with a hospitalist. I had experience with this with my father. Problem I faced was while I think the hospitalist is/was competent they are only on for so many days (3 in my father's case) and then you get a new one who has to relearn the patient.

Another issue some encounter is they (hospitalist) work for the hospital. One issue - you may be admitted for "observation" as opposed to being medicare admitted which throws billing into a entire different perspective. Do a Google search, lots of info on this.

Here in southern most NJ I have neighbors who will drive a loved one to another hospital instead of calling an ambulance.

My current doctor has no hospital privileges. Many of the practices in my area are being acquired by the local hospital system itself.

It is my understanding Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster, PA is now a University of Pennsylvania Hospital. Not affiliated with Penn but actually Penn. Means a lot to me. My family has been using Penn Medicine for 40 years. I will be looking in the Lancaster area for a little house in the spring. Currently looking in the Charlottesville, VA area. Very good medical there.

Choose wisely..

Bay Health Medical Center/Delaware is affiliated with Penn. If you google you will find info on their Cancer Network, Orthopaedic Care, Heart & Vascular. We are comfortable with Bay Health and their affiliation with Penn, and comfortable with being 7-8 minutes away from Bay Health/Dover. https://www.bayhealth.org/penn-medic...t-and-vascular

Is Bay Health located near Bethany or Rehoboth? I thought it was connected with the new hospital in Milford they are building and my understanding is it will be about 40- 45 minutes from the Bethany area. As much as we love the area around Ocean View/Bethany, medical is our one stumbling block.

We're 7-8 minutes from Bay Health (Kent General) in Dover. Our local ambulance service/fire company is not even 2 blocks from our house. I understand that's important to newcomers, but I'm seeing many looking for housing in all the wrong places, if it's REALLY important to them. Priorities for us are those I mentioned above. Distance to the beach is way down the line for us, but still, we're 35-40 minutes from Lewes, and 10-12 minutes from the Delaware Bay (Bowers Beach, Pickering Beach, Kitts Hummock.

I'm having a medical issue presently, not life threatening but possibly serious. I called my PCP at 900am was in the office at 1030 that day. I was scheduled for a CT scan that day for the following day. Got the CT results the same day. Going back tomorrow to PCP, have an MRI at Beebe scheduled this week. All of this began last Monday. I must say I'm impressed so far in the timeliness of care and diagnostics.

I'm a transplant from Maryland, no I wouldn't have open heart surgery here or other life threatening procedures. I'd head for Johns Hopkins, time wise it's only 15-30 minutes more than going to Northern Delaware.

This is a retirement mecca these days, healthcare facilities and personnel will grow with it.

This is great news - now is Bay Health the SAME institution which is going up in Milford for 2019?
