Hi there -

I am in desperate need of advice. My husband is being relocated to Ocean City, MD on the fly and we need to find a place to live very soon. I don't really want to live in Maryland, but I have lived in northern DE before and I'd prefer Delaware over Md. I have absolutely no idea where to start looking and I am panicking, big time.

We have a 2 year old and two huge dogs, so we need to find a town with good schools, good day care and affordable living. I really want to find a place where I can make some friends and where my husband can play Rugby like he does here in Va, and I'd like somewhere that we can get to Ocean City in 45 minutes or less. Can anyone please, please help me out and let me know of some good places to look? I am so nervous and have to find a house to buy - I don't even know where to start!!!

Please feel free to give me any opinions of any towns nearby, I will appreciate it so much!

Thank you!

MollyBeth

If you want to stay in Delaware you'll be looking at Sussex county school districts - Sussex County Education -- Sussex County Online, Delaware Compare them here - Delaware Schools - Find a Public or Private Delaware School - SchoolDigger.com My vote would be for Cape Henlopen School district. Lewes is a nice little town with wonderful beaches too. Cape Henlopen School District - Home

I would have to agree with toobusytoday... I have heard Cape Henelopen is the "best" district in Sussex County. We have a few friends that live down that way, and they are very happy with the schools. I will say, their kids are special needs, so what the parents were looking for was different. But to me, if a district looks out for the special population, the standard education for the other kids is probably good too.

Lewes IS a nice town, and very close to the beach. Both bayside and ocean side. If you don't want to be that close to the beach, Milton is just a bit up route 1 and still in the Cape Henelopen district (I believe). Check out the link toobusytoday gave you for the district's website, and if you need a realtor referral, send me a direct message. One of the parents I spoke of happens to be one, and I will be glad to pass on their contact information.

Mary

Here is a interactive map of all the school districts in DE. I think you will find this link above, ranking the states school districts, and find the higher ranked of the southern DE school districts is Indian Creek. If the housing in Fenwick or Bethany is within your price range, both are great places to live provided you can deal with the weekend and vacation traffic during July and August.

Inland, Millsboro is more affordable from a RE standpoint and is an easy drive to the sales tax free shopping at the outlet malls in Lewes, and much of the other shopping (Target, Best Buy, Lowes, etc.) needed in life.

I don't know about these rankings. I looked at the ones for Pennsylvania, and the one school that is considered the top high school in the state is #6, behind one from Erie.

If I was a new person, I would certainly take rankings into consideration, but would think about how many other newcomers there are, and whatever your other priorities are. In my area often people move to an area with good schools and well priced housing but some are dissatisfied after the move because there is no nearby shopping or entertainment.
