The tooth is in the very back, it's close to being infected and hurting. Got some antibiotics today, and need to make a decision. The tooth on the bottom same side has been removed years ago. I chew on the other side. It's calcified, so they want to send me to a specialist ($$$). Crown only is $650, pulling is $30 (my costs). Maybe I could get an implant on top and bottom later.
I'm 39 and have pretty bad teeth in general (need LOTS of work) -- (my mom had gum disease and had hers all pulled and false teeth by 40)
What would you do? What's best for the overall health of my mouth and body?
Please look at the pics first...

What does the dentist say is the better option in your case? I personally would do whatever I could to save the tooth. Root canals are painless in most cases. Mine which was done years ago was completely painless.
Is the 2nd pic a "bite wing"? B/C it's an x-ray of 8 or 10 teeth, all on that one x-ray. A good dentist would do a more detailed x-ray of just that one tooth (or maybe 2 or 3 teeth).
Also, you're in the USA? Where? Where can you get a crown for $650, or a tooth pulled for $30? I'd also say to save the tooth. But when you say you "have pretty bad teeth in general (need LOTS of work)".......
Then I don't know. You need to find a dentist who can lay out the options for you, for all of your problem teeth. Good luck.

This. Implants don’t last forever, so the OP will have to get another at his age. Even if he eventually has to get one after a root canal/crown, he can hopefully keep his tooth long enough to only need one implant.
That tooth has no opposing tooth. It’s not helping you to chew. Calcified canals in an upper molar will make the root canal treatment longer and more difficult. And there’s no guarantee it will work anyway. Just get it pulled.

That’s a panoramic film. Bite wings don’t show that much.
