I am coming to the Denvr area with my wife, she will be staying with a close friend of hers, in August and I want to go hiking alot. I know there are lots of guide boks out there but which ones or one is the best for excellent trails within 1 to 2 hours of Denver and include the 14'ers nearby? I plan to do short hikes and longer ones and of course want to hit at least 3 or 4 14'ers if I can. Thanks.

No need for a guidebook just check out 14ers.com. They have comprehensive route info for all the 14ers, and includes recent trip reports and maps. Within a 2 hours drive from Denver there are several 14ers of from relatively easy (Bierstadt) to very difficult (Longs Peak). In August we are still in summer storm season so be sure and start early and plan on getting below timberline before 1 pm when the storms pop up.

If you are not at the summit by noon, you're too late.

Check out this site for some trails.

The Colorado Mountain Club publishes a book titled 'The Best Denver Hikes' which are all within about an hour of Denver. I bought it when I moved here and it's been a great guidebook, also is small enough to fit in your pack. Goes for about $12 on amazon.

For 14ers go to 14ers.com and read the route description. I'd recommend doing some warm up hikes prior to tackling 14ers.

protrails.com is also an excellent resource.

You can't go wrong with any of the Jefferson County Open Space hikes.

For a good workout I recommend starting at the East Trailhead of Mount Falcon and taking the Castle Trail up the mountain.
https://www.co.jefferson.co.us/opens...ce_T56_R16.htm
"The 2,000-foot elevation gain of the Castle Trail, a steep climb from the east, provides a vigorous workout and 14er training ground."

When I had visitors from out of town I would take them to the West Trailhead and hike around the top but that is for those just looking for a good scenic hike.
