Hi all,
All of our relo plans are falling into place: neighborhood, house, schools for kids, etc....except my husband has had very little luck even getting bites with his job search. He has extensive experience in the civil/environmental construction field in NYC and we thought it would be a fairly easy process in Denver. Alas, it has not and we are freaking out, as we move in six weeks.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get moving with this, beyond the obvious job search websites, recruiters, etc...?

He has no contacts in CO, so he has no one he can contact to help.

Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated!!

I used to work for a civil engineering firm in Denver, and I know that they post their job openings on their website. I don't know if they also use the job search websites. Maybe your husband should start looking at individual websites for the companies that use his expertise.

Thanks. I just suggested that to him. I know unemployment is low in CO and construction is booming, so hopefully this will happen soon.

I agree with looking at individual company websites. Do some research of possible firms and check all of their sites. Contrary to the low unemployment numbers, it isn't easy getting a job when you are coming from out of state with no contacts. Having a local address will help.

Try calling the Reference Librarian at the public library. Ask her/him to use one of their business compendiums to get a list of firms in that specialty. There are publications that list such things for numerous fields. I did this once in COLO SPGS for aerospace work and she found at least 60 local firms who had their toes in that puddle, most of which I'd never heard of, and I was in defense for 30+ years.

I see a ton of jobs with construction companies on linked in and indeed.com etc. They overlap with m ly super generic title if senior project manager. Alas, I have no construction background.

Make sure he is re-writing or editing his resume for each job. Take the job description and be sure every qualification is addressed that can be addressed.

Try to appear local by using a local address or area code.

Mention in the cover letter that you are moving on a certain date. Don't be vague. You want them to know you will be in Denver for sure. They get a lot of people dreaming about moving.
