I would like to be able to live as car free as possible. How do you rate down town living, compared to the Capital Hill area? My first impression, CH is a little spread out, and I would end up driving more often.

Check www.walkscore.com

I think one of the main things Cap Hill has going against it is no Light Rail stop.

I would say about the same so depends what you need... sounds like you already have access to a car
DownTown has the high rise living where cap hill single family, duplex and mid rise mostly
so day to day necessities kinda sparse either way once your standing on the street
Bars, entertainment a little younger in capHill and populated with actual people
Cap hill's QueenSoopers, TraiderJoe are unique to capHill
I feel safer (while walking) in capHill but likely an illusion; it feels like a neighborhood not cooperate headquarters

alternative transport:
Cap hill has more parking options
capHill has lots of bus service, yes, lite rail is more dependable
consider getting a functional medium quality bike?
maybe a scooter, again functional medium quality beater

walk from capHill -> dwnTown ~20-44 minutes? so maybe no difference
