As we prepare to move to a new house in WDM, we're considering giving up cable since we don't watch a lot of t.v. anyway; we've already switched from home phone service to just using our Verizon cell phones. Are there some savvy techies out there who can tell us what our options are and give us some recommendations? When we DO watch t.v., it's typically things like HGTV, Food Network, or SciFi. I want to be able to watch the NFL games, too, 'tho we could always go to a local sports bar if necessary...

I'm interested in this discussion, as well. I'm getting nine channels over the air in Columbus, OH with a tall pair of "rabbit ears" for digital signals. I'd be very happy if I could pick up NBC and PBS in Des Moines with the same equipment.

The entire state of Iowa is under the Mediacom cable and internet monopoly. I feel sorry for them because it's one of the worst providers in the land.

At least in CR, it's changing ... a fairly new local company, ImOn, is giving them competition now. So far, very good customer service. Mediacom is trying their best to win customers back with deals, but I'm through with them.

So, if you don't use Mediacom, what service DO you use? Can anyone recommend other internet providers in the area, besides CenturyLink (I've heard they're every bit as bad as Mediacom, if not worse)? If I understand things correctly, we can get internet and then just use Netflix, Plex, or a similar service to stream tv shows and movies.

I'll be watching this thread as well. My wife and I are relocating back to Iowa from Tulsa, OK and will be living hopefully in the Clive area. They have COX for TV and internet here and I love it until I called to have my services disconnected at the end of the week and asked about transferring it to Iowa and they said they pulled out of Iowa I lived in Mason City and when I left 14 years ago COX was there.

CenturyLink doesn't provide cable service, they just have a deal where you can bundle your Directv with internet and phone.

I don't have TV service, I have a digital converter to watch over the air TV. I rarely watch anymore, though, and watch mostly Netflix or stream TV shows on my laptop from a free site there. There are quite a few over the air TV channels, more than 9 for sure (someone else said they get 9 where they are)

I beg to differ. I'm under the Cox monopoly and their customer service is way below ZERO. The actual service itself isn't bad, but heaven help you if you need support. I've been called a liar, hung up on, transferred endlessly back and forth, on ad infinitum. I would dearly love to find a supplier that didn't require a dish, which my complex won't allow.

If I watch anything it's Netflix Streaming. Never had Cable. Half the time in a hotel I don't find anything worth watching either.

Elletea, thanks! I'll put up an antenna on the roof if I need to, but if I can get NBC and PBS with rabbit ears, I'll call that good.

I don't watch much TV, either. I borrow movies from the library, mostly, but it's nice to have a few options in the winter.
