I'm planning on moving to the Metro Detroit area in late spring/summer, and I'm having a hard time finding an affordable place to rent in the west/north west suburban area. I'm currently in Indianapolis right now and I understand that the cost of living is going to be a little bit higher, but I'm wanting to find a place where I can get a roommate or two and pay only around $350 a month, and I don't want it to be in a house that's falling apart, and I want it to be in a safer area. I also most importantly don't want to be in a subdivision trapped in the middle of millions of others to where the main intersections are all stop signs without a major shopping center and restaurant area nearby, (like 10 Mile west of Beck) I would rather swim in a thawed out lake St. Clair with a -11 windchill outside then live in an area like that. Hope I made sense on the last one. I don't mind if it's an apartment complex or a house as long as it fits the criteria I described. The suburbs I'm looking at are the following:

Livonia
Farmington/Farmington Hills
Southfield
Westland
Canton
Novi
because it would take to long to list them all, all of the other little communities surrounding the ones I mentioned.

Obviously as of now I'm just lurking, I mean looking, as it's still a few months away, but any advice would help!

I've looked on Zillow and Craigslist, pretty tough luck. I don't know if it's normal but I'm not into living somewhere where it's free for me in terms of U.S. dollars, but my payment would be having sex with a cougar. Just my personal thoughts on that one.....

I've found an area that I like but I want more options, the area I found that I like is springlake area around Pontiac Trail and Beck Road in Novi

That $700 budget will be tough to meet. Especially the west side and near impossible to the north.

Westland, Garden City and select areas of Livonia will work in that range.

You would have better luck in the Down River area finding rent in this price range. Novi, Farmington and most of Southfield probably start around $850-$1000 for a two bedroom apartment. And a house will be close to $1200-$1500 in the same areas.

I live in this area. Houses are quite expensive, and even the apartments are out of your pricerange, with the exception of probably The Village, which I have read bad reviews and word of mouth.

Edward rose (http://www.edwardrose.com/) has a bunch of apartments in the area. I live in one of them but I'm pretty sure they're over your budget although you could find a two bedroom in the 800-850ish area.

I could afford to pay $400-$450 a month but would rather not so I thought that I would see, and fair enough, I figured it would be tough finding a place for $350 in Oakland county with a roommate, but I think it's possible to find something like that somewhere, I'll keep waiting to see if anyone on here knows anything else.

Westland apartments seem to be pretty cheap if that's just the concern.
