I am diabetic, broke my big toe about 2.5 months ago and now it looks like I might have to have it amputated. Initially Doc didn't want to operate on broken toe cause of my uncontrolled diabetes but it seems to be infected internally (mri tomorrow) , still is twice as big as normal, is red and warm. Depending on MRI he is thinking that amputation is best course. he is orthoman.

I already have balance problems mostly related to neuropathy- didn't even know my toe was broken in 2 places- and I'm worried how missing a big toe will further complicate my balance issues.

My father in law and uncle started out loosing toes then eventually lost both legs just below the knee. How long have you been a diabetic??? Do you check your sugar daily, are you eating the right foods? My uncle had severe neuropathy in his feet and hands. So bad that when he stepped on a peice of glass he did not feel it or know about it until his heel got infected and gangerous. He went into a hyperbaric chamber to try and save the foot but he ended up getting amputated below the knee. what meds are you on? Is your diabetes uncontrolled because you aren't taking care of it? Or is it because it's just so severe that even with proper nutrition and meds it's hard to control. I know first hand about diabetes from so many members of my family having it. DH included but he's type 2 and lost of a ton of weight and is off meds for now. It's a terrible disease and I wish there was a cure. I hope everything goes well for you. Unfortunatley my uncle passed away from a diabetic coma in 2007 at age 57. he was diagnosed at age 9, was on several meds, he even had the insulin pump. Good luck.
