I looked this up and this is a genetic disease that I do not have (thanks 23 and me) but possible that I could have a mild version of it?
Symptoms include,
- low blood sugar. (glycogen is not broken down to give you sugar)
- waking up in the middle of the night due to low blood sugar.
- weight gain.
- swollen belly / liver impairment. (your liver fills with glycogen especially if you eat a lot of carbs)
Of course much more serious than me. But this disorder is made up of 14 different variants for the enzymes that are missing.
Basically if you have certain enzymes that are missing you are not able to break down glycogen like normal people and you simply store it.
What if, people have a milder form of this. When they can break glycogen down but it just takes longer to do so. So most people will turn to fat burning after about 12 hours of fasting but if you have a mild form of this. you take 15 hours.
This would mean you would have a much harder time losing weight. The way to lose weight would be
1. eat less carbs and
2. eat less calories (which would in general reduce carbs)
The reason I suggest this is that most keto or fasting diets work based on insulin being the problem, but I don't have an insulin problem. Test results have always come back low or normal. Also my blood sugar is unusually low for my age... and I have suspected some sort of low blood sugar issue keeps waking me up in the middle of the night. Keto also typically makes me sick. I have found that I must have about 50gs of carbs per day or I will end up sick to my stomach. This makes me think that it is low blood sugar.
