Wondering if I am handling this correctly.

The situation: we have a 8 y.o. sweet 50 lb. female shepherd mix named Kona whom we pulled out of a shelter as a puppy. We recently found an equally sweet 10 lb. maltese/poodle mix (approx 1-2 yrs. old). We decided to keep her and we named her Gigi.

Occasionally, Gigi gets too riled up and annoys Kona who will then give her a little warning as if to say "Enough sister!" That just riles Gigi up more and she gets aggressive with Kona, barking and lunging at her. Kona is relatively restrained in her response but she does growl back and unless we are right there to intervene, it will begin to look like they are fighting but I can see that Kona is really holding back and doing her best to avoid escalating the situation.

We intervene by pulling Gigi the instigator away and holding her down to the ground and saying a firm "no" over and over. It's almost as if Gigi can tell that Kona won't hurt her and since she's smaller she's going to act as tough as she can to compensate for her smaller size.

Anyone dealt with this before or simply know if we should do anything differently?

Thanks.
