Today I saw in the news a public supported program to provide trained assistance dogs to disabled veterans ("Vets Helping Heroes"). It's going to be on NBC nightly news tonight, 6:30 EST, tune in.
The saddest part is that our own government doesn't help our vets with these life-saving dogs. Unbelievable that this is not deemed important enough to get funds.

It costs something like 70 grand to train a dog for veteran assistance. They need private funds to keep up with the demand.
That too is incorrect. It depends on the type of dog, for example, a PTSD dog is not costly to train, there are programs that use shelter dogs, and prisoners to train the dogs. There are minimal costs to a program like that. Programs which train guide dogs for the blind are more costly, but thos programs are heavily subsidized by grants. It is not all supported by private funds. It varies on the program, and dog skills.
