Hi guys! I know you can buy a breed kit swab and pay $60 or so and get this answer, but I thought you might be keen on knowing the characteristics of your hounds and dogs and might tell me what do you think this dog is mixed with?
He's obviously black lab +....
He's not lab stocky, he's....I don't know, boxer shaped? he's very curvy under his belly and up to his legs? He has longer ears than other black labs, and has a thick gruff on his back and his neck is thick-but the skin is loose-is that lab?
I've looked up Goldens and black labs, but it doesn't seem to fit. Maybe I should look at Boxer breeds? what are larger dogs that have the dog track curved upper body style??
He stands exactly two feet tall at the shoulders when standing on all 4's.
His name is Dozer-he's a rehabbed shelter dog with a broken/limp hip that my BF adopted 5 years ago-he's 7 now.
Primarily Lab. Quite possibly even all lab....I have a black Lab who looks very much like this, more leggy than stocky and certainly not a well-bred dog (but an amazingly nice and good dog!) He is leggy and goofy and floppy-eared and won't retrieve a darn thing (although he likes water.)
There are two different Lab "types" - and of course many purebred dogs look nothing like the ideal standard. Field-bred Labs and show-bred Labs. English or American Lab?
Would agree that he possibly has some hound in him, but not all labs are stocky, and I would consider him to likely be 75%+ lab. A field line labrador should be anything but stocky. The stocky, block-headed labs are a show-ring creation, much like the frog legged German Shepherds of modern day. These are both purebred labradors from different lines:
He's a black mutt. There may be some Lab in there, but he's small for that. There's a lot of some kind of hound type there. Maybe a Coon Hound??? I think they are black and smaller than labs.

No, he's not. The breed standard for labrador retrievers:
Quote:
Size--The height at the withers for a dog is 22½ to 24½ inches; for a ***** is 21½ to 23½ inches. Any variance greater than ½ inch above or below these heights is a disqualification. Approximate weight of dogs and ******* in working condition: dogs 65 to 80 pounds; ******* 55 to 70 pounds.

Not at all small for the breed. The OP says two feet at the shoulder, the AKC standard says:

Coonhounds come in a range of colors depending on the type but solid black is not a coonhound color.
Also they are quite a bit larger and taller than a Lab.
I personally don't see hound. If there's hound in the mix it is certainly not dominant. OP, does this dog bay or bark a lot?
EDIT, posted at about the same time as sparrowmint.
from those ears, and the loose skin around the neck theres HOUND DOG in there, what type of hound is hard to say, and hes primarly lab, id say hes grandmother or grandfather as probably a hound mix, and the rest of him is lab...
definatly not mastif or bully type (boxer, pit, ect)...
but those ears and the neck squish say blood hound, coon hound ect...
I would say lab (probably field lines) with possibly a dash of hound mixed in.
