If you are a contributor to the HSUS, it's good to know where your donation goes. Too bad NBC couldn't put as much effort into their reporting as this TN news department did.
It is criminal how little help for animals HSUS and PETA give. I always encourage folks to give to their local shelters if they are called to give at all. Offices, lobbyists salaries, advertising are all draining money being spent to actually help animals.
We need to get the message out there.
HSUS donations depends on what your focus is. HSUS is the money behind any legislative effort to increase animal cruelty laws, to get puppy mills banned (or at least heavily regulated), and things like that. Animals need lobbyists. Local animal shelters help local animals in the here and now (mainly in providing a humane death - sorry, but only like 30% of animals are adopted each year, the rest are killed), but donating only to them is like trying to scoop water out of a sinking boat with a thimble. It doesn't actually help future generations of animals who are destined to end up there. It doesn't stop millions of animals from being killed. It's a band aid only, it doesn't prevent the wound from happening in the first place. I know that this is an emotional issue, and one is swayed more by their local cute animals in cages, but this is a much bigger issue than one's local shelters. There will never, ever be enough demand for all those cats and dogs, millions will continue to be killed and abandoned, and something must be done to prevent the animals from being born to begin with. HSUS has done a hell of a lot to promote animal welfare through laws, and that is what is needed, and that's why dollars for lobbyists are needed. That's how this country's legislative system works. It's corrupt.
Also, some people confuse HSUS ads with ASPCA ads, ASPCA ads are more commonly seen, are the ones with the Sarah McLachlan music, etc.
PETA is a different issue all together. They are an far out there animal rights organization, and they don't ever claim to be heavily giving to animal shelters.
I think legislation is important.
So it is a hard call.
I think it would be great if people are able to to help their local shelters, with volunteering and provding anythink they are able.
Old towels,dog toys,etc.
Does anyone know how the ASPCA uses donations? I have thought anout being a donor.
