Every time we travel within the U.S. we always have an agonizing debate about whether or not to drive or fly with our dogs. My husband always uses the driving time threshold wherein I tend to think more about money (for instance anything more than 4 days the cost to board them exceeds the cost to fly them). Our preference would be for flying any day just because of the savings in time. However, because we had a great boarding arrangement we haven't flown them with us but are thinking of doing so in a few weeks and again during the holidays.
So I am curious, based on what driving time do you decide it makes more sense to fly with your dog?
Less than 4 hours;
Less than 8 hours; greater than 4
Less than 12 hours; greater than 8
Less than 16 hours; greater than 12
Less than 24 hours; greater than 16
If you have any stories about flying with your dog (good or bad) I would also appreciate it!
Where does boarding come into play if you are taking them either way?
I am missing something- if you're gone for more than 4 days (whether you fly them or drive them) how would the boarding cost change?
It costs us $75 a day to board them and $75 a ticket for each leg we fly then. We have two Poms so if we fly, it'll cost us $300 total, which is equal to the cost of boarding them for four days. If we are going any longer than that is when we start thinking about driving. My husband feels if we can drive in less than 10 hours then we should do that and save on both the boarding and flying cost. As I prefer to fly and not drive that long, it makes more financial sense to fly them with us if we are going for longer than four days, of course there are issues with the logistics of actually flying them but that is another discussion. Does that make more sense?
That would be different. In that case, I don't think the dogs would influence the driving/flying choice that much. Having two 60 lb dogs, that's not an option though.
I'd have no issue with in cabin flight regardless of the distance..
I would NOT fly any of my dogs in cargo unless it was for an overseas transfer or something of that nature. I enjoy their company on trips so I drive...even when its 1800 miles, I drive.

Thank you, I understand now.
