That's a nice story, and I know my dog would do the same (he's fiercely loyal). We had a similar incident around here recently, which didn't end so well - a couple was hit while walking their dog, and only the dog survived.
Cat looks at owner and says in catese "Dude that's so messed up, hope you get better, but I've somewhere to be so...catch up with you for my dinner? Oh, yeah do you think you pick up some new litter on your way back from the ER?"
