At first I was against this as there are so many dogs who need homes...why clone one? But then I started thinking about livestock cloning and it doesn't seem so bad. I'm sure the contest was for publicity. Think how much good $100,000 would do for sick and homeless dogs and cats.
I think the process of cloning is a good idea, it could save someone's life some day from the things they learn. I remember decades ago when NASA was growing by leaps and bounds and many of the tools developed then help us today.
Cloning is useful in livestock. It's possible to produce a whole herd of champion producing milk cows instead of half the calves bring valueless bull calves.
I think the ultimate goal, though, is to clone separate body parts. To be able to grow a new heart in a petri dish instead of waiting for someone with a compatible heart to die.
