I would never allow anyone to do that to my dogs. The dogs were trained that when I sent them out to retrieve, they didn't come back until they found it.

That sort of teasing is both unkind and it destroys training.

I do. My dog never falls for it though.

I seriously doubt it is any worse than the dog acting like s/he is going to bring something only to change direction at the last moment.

As a kid, yes, but I also did other way more stupid and cruel things than that.

I have a very ball focused dog (Taffy), and I think that would take a lot of joy from her if I used her special passion to jerk her around - although I am equally sure she'd get over it with the next ball toss, but it's not something I do.

Depends on well they were trained. Mine likes playing frisebee, she'll even go get it on command and always brings it back until she gets tired in which case she lies down and starts chewing on it.

I can remember when I was a kid playing with a dog that liked fetching and the owner wasn't around for whatever reason. The dog would bring it right back but wouldn't give it you. It wanted to walk around behind you and then sit, then it would give it to you. It was training me.

Sure. Everybody has done it. It's not mean. Hilarious picture.
