Today my FIL accidentally forgot to put the dog gate up before he left for the day and our dear Wally seized the opportunity to go upstairs and promptly take a dump. he had gone to the bathroom earlier in the morning so why he felt the urge to take a dump upstairs is beyond me. most of it got on the wood floor (good because it's solid!) but there was an errant poop that got on the rug (or so I've been told, I hadn't discovered it and it was already disposed of when we got home). I couldn't find any residue, which would be odd since poop would definitely leave one. Anyway, since my daughter plays on that carpet I'd like to make sure it's disinfected. Would the pet stain remover actually sanitize? Any tips on how to sanitize? it's a shag area rug by the way. Thanks....

I think that depends on the type of product you are using. I don't really feel it's sanitized unless it's steam cleaned, though for small messes I feel pretty good using odoban.

Does 'Nature's Miracle' sanitize? I can't remember. But a lot of people swear by that product.

I own a steam cleaner for this precise reason - a large dog made a disgusting mess when poor baby was ill.

First off, let's get some perspective here. We're not talking about industrial chemical waste here, we're talking about ordinary organic poop. It happens. Use an enzyme-based cleaner to remove stain and odor. Nature's Miracle is great and it removes the residues that might entice the dog to mark there again. That and letting it dry thoroughly should be fine.

Thank you for your responses.

Also Parnassia, my perspective is fine. Feces is feces and is considered waste, period. I never knew that there was a distinction between "ordinary organic poop" and any other waste product that transmits pathogens. Since when has fecal matter been downgraded so that you wouldn't disinfect an area? It'd be no different than human poop.

Nature's Miracle or Simple Solution. Spray it liberally (soak the spot) after you clean the mess. These have enzymes that "eat" the organic residue and remove any odors. Even works after the spot is dry.

Thanks I checked out natures miracle! Just what I needed! I knew it treated odors and stains but wasn’t sure if it sanitized too. Makes sense that it does lol.

My mom swears by Lysol disinfectant spray and I've begun using it too. I would still want to steam clean the area though and apply the spray later.

OP your post gave the impression you were overly worried about fairly brief contact between the poop and the carpet. Doesn't require much more than ordinary cleaning. Nature's Miracle or another enzyme product will handle that as well as the lingering aftermath that other household cleaners don't.

I agree. 'It's just feces'? lol.

You can buy a small steam cleaner on Amazon - then use whatever detergent comes with it, followed up by super hot water and vinegar.
