Need some advice - I have a mixed Great Pyrenees with a small tick problem. I'm trying to get a handle on it - had him dipped, sprayed the back yard with Dove dish soap, vacuumed the house & furniture. I also mix garlic with his food 2x daily (no tummy problems with it). Problem is is that he's so big and the ticks are so small I can't see them and a search hasn't shown any latched on for a while. The last straw was last night when we found a baby tick crawling up my son's leg inside the house. My DH wants to have him shaved so that we can see the ticks better. But is this wise? We don't get too cold here in Phoenix & I'm worried about his skin but the sun can be intense. HOWEVER, I also don't want the crawlies in my house, either. We also have 3 cats who I don't want infected and I don't want to find bugs on my kid .
To shave or not to shave? What sprays are best for back yards and for inside the house? Your help is appreciated.
Should also mention that I've had him for about a month.
I had a black lab/Gt Pyr mix some years ago when I lived in New Orleans. I had him clipped short - not shaved bald-every Spring to keep him from getting skin rashes. It was so hot and humid that he would get very ugly skin problems if I didn't have it done. I think if you ask a groomer to give him a short cut it would be OK, just don't leave him out in the sun for long b/c he can get sunburned - and that's painful.
I live in major tick country, I use frontline SPRAY and it works great. I can get all of him with the spray not just a small area. I also use natural items as a suppliment.
Your dogs hair is there for a reason, before you clip him I'd be talking with a vet.

Yes, shave the dog and stop spraying the house. A few ticks and bugs are not the end of the world. The pesticides can cause more damage in the long run, for you and pet.
I would get him a short cut but not shave him.. I would also get some frontline plus and put on him. Ask at a garden center for a spray that kills ticks in the yard.
