Hello all,
I thought this would be the best place to ask. My family has lost both of our dogs (family members really) in the past 8 months. First was my husbands cocker spaniel of 15 years (was his best friend) and I lost my Rhodesian ridge back mix of 12 years in May. These were both truly special dogs. Mine was a rescue. We say they both waited until hubby and I found each other (second marriage for us both) before they left us. All 3 kids were heart broken over both as well. We now feel odd with no dog at home. We are just now considering looking for a new family member. We have pretty much decided to get a very small dog this time. We would like to find a min snoodle, popapoo or something similar, you know, one of those little teddy bears that can climb up on the couch and snuggle with us, take with us everywhere and such.
However I would prefer to adopt one that needs a home verses going to a breeder. I have been keeping an eye on the local shelters but no such luck. I don't mind paying an adoption fee of $100 or $150 or so, but all that I see from breeders are $500 and up...way up!
Any suggestions of where to look for this type of pup at a fair price?
I wound recommend Pet Finder as well, or you can go to your shelters' web sites ( or go in person if they don't have a web site ) and sign up for a dog(s) you want. That is a waiting list if you want a specific dog, and they'll contact you as soon as they get that dog in. Thanks for adopting!!!
I love adoption! And I think websites and petfinder have really made adoption more common and a lot easier. If you want a mutt of some sort, you can usually find a dog that is part whatever you want, in addition to finding one that is 100%.
I have four border collie mixes. I didn't use petfinder, but would if I needed to. (These dogs found their way to me, plus the Best Friends website). How did this 100% beagle get here? His ex-family thought he was a beagle/basset mix. Turns out he's a fat beagle.
I love my adopted gang! Good luck.
You might also want to try the breed rescues. Some will only support the precise breeds, while others will accept the mixes; Schnauzer mix, Poodle mix etc. etc
Try not to buy a "designer dog" from a pet shop, pet shops are a rip off - go to a breed specific rescue group once you find the breed you like after you research. OR go to petfinder.com.
