Who rules NYC sidewalks? (clean, black, shelter, walk) - Dogs - - City-Data Forum

This letter remarks the conduct for the owners of dogs in this building.

I understand dogs and owners should follow rules to allow us all to leave in community but, isn’t this building going to far?

My question is: Can a building owner rule about dogs doing "businesses in the sidewalks of NYC?

Someone knows?

Not sure what happened to your post with all those "fonts" in it ? But anyway I would say the property owner definitely has the right to post that rule. Too many people do NOT clean up after their dogs and this can certainly create problems with people walking/stepping in it and health hazards. I don't blame this company one bit for putting that out there. I've been to N.Y.C. and I can't imagine someone letting their dog go on the sidewalk and just leave it there or urinate on buildings.

We lived in an apartment in Anchorage when we first came to Alaska. Tenants were told to pick up after their dogs; well needless to say you had those who didn't. It's not fun stepping in a big pile of doo-doo. It's a shame that some pet owners don't have the decency to clean up after their animals and they always make it hard on the ones that do.

If every person makes rules according with their interest, why we need the government for?

What is next? Dogs can’t walk in the sidewalks?

NYC already has laws about picking up after the dogs.

This building is going WAY too far. They do NOT own the sidewalks. I live in NYC. There are excellent laws about picking up after one's dog. As far as urinating on buildings...a dog who needs to pick up his leg HAS to go against SOMETHING. It's either buildings or trees...

It sounds as if the building has tenants who obviously do not abide by the laws. I do agree that when a male dog has to go he has to go, however, the owner can certainly try to get the dog to an area away from the building before he does have to go. I don't find urinating on buildings so bad, it's those who don't clean up the poo after them.

I don't like additional laws and we all know NYC already has enough of them. My husband is a native New Yorker. But I do know the frustration of being a responsible pet owner and living in an apartment building and always having to watch where you stepped while walking your dog. We don't have to worry about that anymore since we lived there for a year and bought our own home.

I agree 100% with this letter from the landlord. 1st, if you're dog is on the property or even on the street without a leash the dog should be taken away from you and put in a shelter and you should have to pay thousands in fines.

As for the 30 foot rule.. It would depend on the property line. If they own the property within 30 feet of the building then they have the right to tell you to have your dog lift it's leg elsewhere
