We are relocating from the Twin Cities to Duluth. Does anyone have experience with living on Park Point? Is the traffic unbearable? Do you know what the school situation like? Are there children there?

Thanks in advance,

There are lot's of families and some nice houses on Park Point. Traffic can be fairly heavy at time, but it is only a two land road. The only real downsides are the bridge and the sometimes extra extreme weather. The bridge goes up fairly often during the shipping season, so I'm sure there will be plenty of times you'll be sitting and waiting. I believe they give residents bridge schedules though, so you can get in habit of leaving when it's down. Also, since it's a thin sand bar, during winter blizzards the wind can be very strong coming off the lake. Last year's huge blizzard left drifts as high as 8 and 9 feet along the road on Park Point.

That said, being a Duluth resident, I would still love to live on Park Point. Right in middle of all the Canal Park excitements and right on a real, sandy beach with some of the best Duluth has to offer, literally in your back yard.

Aluminumpork -- may I ask which neighborhood you live in? Or other places you'd recommend? There is a nice house in Lakeside we're also considering. The point house is kinda a lark - but in some ways why not?

I hope I haven't scared you from Park Point, that's not what I was going for. I live in Duluth Heights, which I quite like. Very close to the mall and 90% of Duluth's shopping, yet many areas of it are very buffered from the traffic and noise. Houses usually start at $150,000.

Lakeside is a very safe bet. Lots of families, small businesses, Ordean Middle School and right on the lake. Grocery, gas, clinic, car wash etc all 5 minutes from anywhere you can live in Lakeside. Beautiful homes on the lake side of London Road (nice homes through out though).

Pretty much any east side neighborhoods are a safe bet, Kenwood, Woodland, Duluth Heights, Lakeside Congdon, they're all great. Even some areas of West Duluth are very nice.

I made a post awhile ago about Duluth Neighborhoods, you can read it here:

Park Point is awesome. Unless its changed significantly since I lived in the area there isnt much in the way of the basics (grocery stores, etc). I remember there being one gas station/market, but other than that you have to go back over inland to shop.

Park Point would be a great place to live. Crowded in the summer with traffic. Right now the bridge is undergoing renovation and painting which may cause more delays. There is a few shopping touristy places on the point and a service station. Overall, I think I would give it a go for living on the point, but even old tiny houses needing lots of repair are WAY overpriced, but if you can do it, why not?

Yep, the gas station/grocery is still there, and still is the only option.

lucie1970, hello ur from the metro area? Have you ever visited Duluth before? Its only 2.5 hours away.
Personally I like Park Point. To drive through. Not to live on it. We had several heavy snowstorms and when they sock the point in its everyone for them selves out there. People drive the point just to watch other people shoveling out. Then some of the vids. end up over on YouTube. LOL.
We are talking drifts up to the roofs of two story houses. Do a google search, and see.
Folks get bridged all the time. It could be you or me or someother guy listening to KQ95 when the DJ says this songs going out to the driver who is bridged on Park Point in 95 degree weather.
If I could I would rather choose some other location in Duluth to live at. But like I said I like Park Point. Im one of the drivers who are part of the heavy traffic that residents put up with because they like living on the Point. Its all really a choice.
There are no schools on Park Point.
Id recommend a drive to Duluth for a day trip.
Good luck have fun
