I am starting with a new CPA, and just got a hefty invoice, before "tax season" has even begun. A line of the invoice is for "preparation of year end tax proformas and related schedules." Can someone provide an in depth explanation as to what that is, beyond just an estimate of next years taxes? How labor intensive is this, in terms of hours billed? Would he have much to show me if I asked to see whatever paperwork is associated with this? Is this standard for new clients, and is this done every year?
I was not aware that I would be getting a tax proforma, so I'm rather surprised at how big this invoice is. Can't he just look at last year's return to estimate this years taxes?

I'm assuming (with all attendant risk) he was analyzing your numbers
for possible year end adjustments that might be appropriate.
What did he say when you asked him?
And f/t/m, when you asked him on what authority he undertook to do the work?

Nothing, yet. I am trying to gather information before I call, to better understand their language. Thank you for the link.
