I feel like my not having 20 ATM machines located in my area is a mistake. It's nuts how much money can be made from these things...

Tell me about it. I do one of two things now to avoid these ridiculous ATM fees...either I charge the purchase or withdrawl funds from my local bank without incurring any fees at all...its the "convenience" that they are "banking' on...No pun intended!

Never had to use one. If I did, our credit union has no fees and there are loads of machines that are part of their system.

Properly managed finances cause no need for ATMs. Heck we never have to visit a bank. Cannot understant why there are so many physical locations. Why do people go to banks? It has been 20 years and I have forgotten.

I always use my bank's ATMs or get "cash back" when I make a purchase to avoid the ridiculous fees.

Anyone else remember when ATMs were brand new and you could basically use any ATM that beared the symbols on the back of your card for free? Didn't matter even if it was another bank in another state. No fees from the ATM or your bank.

Ahh, the good ole days.

Couldn't have said it better myself, Sweetana3! When are people gonna learn that it costs something to use someone else's money. The name of the game is learn how to use other people's money for the lowest cost... Rep points for you!

You have to watch the "cash back" options -- some merchants charge for that, as well -- it is why they offer it -- read your receipt.

The "free" to start routine is/was the same as the credit card crack dealers and drug dealers use. Called "try some, buy some," get you using it for free and then jack it to you. More US business ethic marketing.

Yikes! I only do that at Publix (grocery store) and 7-11, but I'll double check my receipts from now on. Thanks for the heads up!

Our local Wal Mart charges $3 fee for getting cash back.
