It's not just the West, but the rich. The most anti-communist propaganda today is at ex-USSR (also in Venezuela, but for a slightly different reason). Because without it, people will elect communists again - something the current oligarchy has all reasons to be afraid of.

what is the deal with Venezuela, a place I don't know a great deal about?

I'll have to do some research, but can you give a brief summary, in a nutshell - thanks

It's pretty hard to find out what's going on there, thanks to all propaganda. In a nutshell it's:

Oil rich Venezuela was an American puppet-state, when suddenly socialist Hugo Chavez have won the elections. Venezuelan oligarchy decided to fight for the death, and is aided by the US.

They attempted a coup de tat, which was reversed by people.

Economic and social successes of Chavez are hard to measure, but I consider them great. He also inspired the socialist movement in all Latin America.

The US is unhappy, but can't really do anything except propaganda, because, when America planned on invading Venezuela, Russia sent troops there, to protect the new democracy. And war with Russia is simply insane.

If you are really interested in Venezuela, I suggest to start by watching this documentary - it's very strong, and also shows, how pathetic oligarchs' propaganda is, when viewed at the right angle:

All isms are utopian pipe dreams with lofty, unattainable goals. Reality is somewhere in between

Reality is illusion...

All ideologies, including half-ways, are meant for peasants. The only valid mindset is: do, what is best.

But, unfortunately, it is beyond comprehension of almost all folks

Seriously man...which part actual falls under communism? That is how you practice a police state, extreme militarization, political isolation and moral corruption. I don't think communists suggest kidnapping the cast in the communist theory of cinema.

Speaking of movie making, you ever see the God Father part three when the assassin dressed as a priest? Same reason why dictatorships dress themselves in benign moral philosophies. It probably makes it worse because when doing "god's work", all despicable acts are justified. The kinder more delicate the creed -liberty, fraternity, equality- the more its about picking between slavery or a dirt nap.

The weakness of communism readily apparent in the theory is tragedy of the commons. Norway is far more Marxist than they are.

This is one reason why I am all about the fundamentals. As soon as one waxes poetic in economics, suddenly someone can say a particular economist is like a flesh eating zombie. I can't imagine any resemblance to communism or Marxism. Marx said nothing about the state dictating the creation of any product. A standard pair of underwear under the Soviet system isn't Marxism.

When Soviet Union was alive North Korea was a very developed country (for the 3rd world), while SK was just a huge village. But then US destroyed NK's power plants, leaving it with closed factories, and even without home lights. It also threatened (and still does) to nuke NK.
Agree, economic isolation must also be a cause. People die of heat attacks, car accidents and falling off a cliff. None of those bad things is caused by "communism".

A weakness of anarchical communism is best described just after the Russian revolution. A leaderless movement like Kerensky was easily usurped by the Bolsheviks.

Why should you try something that has always failed... Communism has killed more people then both WW1 and WW2 combined. It has caused poverty for tens of millions. Even in China today, over 90% of the population live in poverty...

Get real...

Georgism was never tried either. Seems pretty simple to me. Make the freebie wealth like beach fronts the tax base. Everyone seems to understand roads need to be public else we would have toll bridges everywhere. Tolls on the Rhine really must have been great for commerce. Lets have some leisure soused fat slob whose only contribution is planting his flag?
Land has similar opportunities of vast monopolization wealth. So when a state needs revenue, tax that not labor and capital.

Its also a bit mindbogglingly irritating for it to be called right or left since its neither of these decrepit philosophies of a swineherd. Its just the correct one. The best insulation from the accusations on the right is William F. Buckley. Don't take it up with me. Prove he was a lefty first because he was Georgist.
