Here's the article from the Global Hospitality Group. Any business person with common sense in removing additional paperwork in reporting would consider removing the mandatory tip policy and perhaps increase prices. When the governement continues to mandate taxes, rules and regulations to restaurants and its employees what's next a "Self Serve" Ruth Chris Steak House?

It just changes the law to require it not be seen as tip for tax purposes. It allows a service charge of same or even suggested tipping depending on what restaurant decides. It basically says to be a tip it must be voluntary by the customer;not mandated.Otherwise it normal income if required.

Tax, tax, tax, tax, tax. As I said give government the ok to tax they will eventually come after you. And guess what class warfare and income inequality is all about... getting you to agree to raising taxes again.

When I was a server the tax was 10% of the food sales at the end of the day. If all your tips were on paper then that amount was the taxed amount. It's very sad that they think servers are getting rich on 10 tops.

I am getting really fed up with tipping craziness.
I eat out a LOT less and eat at home and/or buy takeout much more just to avoid it.
Of course, special occasions are an exception, but they are thankfully few and far between.
Is that why there are so many restaurant groupons nowadays?

A penny for your thoughts? You give your two cents. The other disappears when the IRS swoops in and snags it.

I never said anything about Government not being to blame for this...

just thought it was odd to personally blame Obama like it was his idea.

Yep... I tell people all the time "if you don't like/enjoy tipping then don't go to places where it's expected"

Any charge that's mandatory should be taxable, period. It's always been an issue for me as well because it basically insulates the server from the risk of poor performance. Plus, I detest being told how much to tip, it should reflect on the level of service provided.

And only because it's sort of related, why are customers now expected to tip for everything from having a counter person pour a cup of coffee to a cashier handing over a bag of take-out food?

How about raising the wages of Servers/Waiters? That is not an option!!!!
Maybe this will help people think that instead of fleecing customers upto 20% of Bill for average service, its high time salary of Waiters should increase. But we as a nation are more worried about millions more in bonuses for top bosses while customers are fleeced and waiters live on poverty wages.
