Because no one exists in a vacuum. You can do all the right things but that does not mean other things outside of your control are not going against you. That is why we see people with college degrees who did everything right working at low wage jobs. What about people who are the heirs of the rich and given lots of money or high position at the company? They did not make any choices they were just born to the right family. Saying it is all about choices is done by people who want to believe the only reason they succeeded is that they work hard and did everything right and there was no one else who helped them or no luck involved. Thier narcissistic attitude will not let them believe otherwise.
But that essentially means we're going to have to stop living life on autopilot and start being willing to cooperate with each other and be willing to inconvenience ourselves.
This is not. And it's not capitalism, either. More like Crony-ism or Corporate Socialism or Cartel-ism or Fascism...but definitely not free market capitalism.
call it what you want, it is our system. We are proof that its and unintended consequence of capitalism, Or intended by many. If we want capitalism to succeed, It has to be dealt with.
There is nothing about capitalism or any economic system that prevents the wealthiest in a society to simply take over the government and pass laws for its benefit. That is why the economies of the U.S., Japan, Russia, China, and Germany look so similar nowadays.
The problem with any economic theory is that they ignore history and the ultimate outcomes of all economic systems.
Same applies to European socialism, so those propping That up can't have it both ways. Not saying you are, but many have.

If you don't work hard and make good decisions then you have zero chance. Is that better?

You keep calling it capitalism. But it really isn't. We need true free market capitalism. We don't have it right now. If we don't get it soon, we're in big trouble.

I disagree. There are too many negative externalities for "pure" free-market to serve the needs of the masses. How would monopoly be kept in check, or the type of reckless lending that created the housing mess? And how would you keep the rich from getting richer at the expense of everyone else until the lower classes were forced to resort to barter because they had no money?
