It's always enlightening to check with the National Center for Education Statistics once they breakdown these PISA scores. Once you adjust for income levels and demographics you can then see how our scores compare to other countries a little more clearly.

One of the most interesting datasets we get to look at though.

So why don't we just emulate the best ? I am not saying copy what Asians do, but the Finns and especially the Canadians are very close to us culturally. How come that Canada is #10 and we're #28 ?

True but in the US our demographics are changing and the overall scores reflect the changing demographics. And the group becoming the majority are not all that great when it comes to K-12.

We should definitely be looking at Canada. We can't emulate many other countries because of differences in culture and attitude towards education but I don't think Canada is that different from us. Obviously, we aren't doing this right. We need to take a lesson from those who are.

We have 10 times the population of Canada and a much higher immigration rate from a lower-income population. 1.2% of the Canadian population is "Hispanic" and 2.5% is Black. Comparing one country to another with these tests is essentially meaningless, unless you have a political or sensationalist agenda.

That's what I mean. Our demographics are way different than any of the top countries. When adjusted by race you can see why our scores come out so low. White students in America score over the average OECD, with Asian Americans scoring higher than whites, then hispanic and then african american and I believer Native American might be below AA's in the scoring.

There's also the fact that some countries don't test as many as way do. China is notorious for not testing as large a percentage of their population and some countries are outright fraudulent when it comes to testing.

So how are they that different from us that they teach their children better?

I stand by what I said. I don't think that Canada is that different from us that we could not emulate what they do that is working. I don't think we're dealing with a major cultural difference as we would be if we were talking about Asian countries. So what are the differences?
