Expelled?

Obviously. Compulsory attendence laws meant that they were sort of stuck with me until I reached the age of 16 ... UNLESS; I was dangerous/inflicted harm on students/staff, caused destruction of property, stole property, etc ...

Which I never did. Basically the ONLY thing from those years that I don't have to regret; is that I wouldn't harm a fly & I never got in a fight. And that unlike most people on drugs; I wasn't a thief. I think one time when I was 15 I tried to shoplift some Mascara but got nauseated & couldn't go through with it.

So anyway; I got expelled on the day of my 16th birthday at 9am. Technically it was my Junior year but I hadn't completed nor even shown up for anything since my Freshman year.

My mom sorta tricked me into taking my GED a few months later. I thought I was getting a ride to a friends house but instead I got dropped off for the GED at a community college.

Surprisingly my scores were high. Atypically high for GED takers & even for HS graduates. I got a letter from "The White House" saying something about "we like to encourage those with potential to continue their education ..."

And I thought "No; I really don't think school is for me".

The next year I took those GED scores & started college because I decided that abject poverty really wasn't "for me" either.
And yet Al Gore and Obama pushed for 18 to be the compulsory attendance age...

No, in fact, it was the first time that he ever had any type of detention. I don't remember why he got in school suspension, just that it was something stupid that was blown way out of proportion.

That being said, I would say there should be fixed times when kids in that situation are allowed to use the bathroom. Every couple of hours, there should be a supervised bathroom break. I'm surprised they jut left it up to the whim of each individual teacher.
Who would do the supervising? And what level of supervision? Would the person doing the supervising just escort the student to the bathroom and wait outside? Or go inside the bathroom with the student? Would the person doing the supervision watch the student doing his business? Would all students get their bathroom break together, or at different times? Would the person doing the supervising have to be the same gender as the student?

I do wonder what would have happened if somebody who was denied a bathroom break urinated in his pants during in school suspension.

sounds like me: I had a month of detention, so did my best friend. All it took was standing in line for with a forged note by the two of us, the morning after we cut school all day. We learned that you are expected to attend class and if you are truly sick or have a good reason, mom has to write the note, you don't write one for each other.

A suspension would disqualify you from extra-curricular activities, and possibly honors and AP classes. Those would hurt your chances of college admissions.

If you have an exam on a day that you have in school suspension (or out of school suspension), the teacher has the option of giving you a 0 for that exam. That alone could hurt your chances of college admissions. The one time I had in school suspension, luckily, none of my teachers exercised that option, even though I had several exams that day. Most let me take the exam during detention. One teacher had me take the exam the next day.
Sounds like a pretty ****ty school to me.

It was an interesting conversation. "Son you are in real trouble, that is not how a gentleman should act, Violence is not the answer. Bad boy."

"Oh by the way, since you are stuck at home for a week, lets go order that video game you have been wanting so you have something to do. (Silently - good boy, look out for your sisters - always)."

I wanted to give him a pat n the back and $100. But that would not be appropriate parenting. So I lectured him and made it up with a cool video game to play during the suspension. However, i also made him shovel out the drive every time it snowed, to make sure it was not all fun and games.

I did not have do pat him on the back, His sister made it quite clear he was a hero. Now she is 22 and he is 21 and he is still her hero. when she has a problem she cannot solve, she calls him. He relies on her for support too, they are very close. Only now he is considerably stronger that most humans his size. I hope none of her boyfriends ever hits her. I would hate for him to go to jail for pulling the guys arms off. I am not sure he has accepted the violence is not the answer lecture if someone hurts his sister(s)

Maybe I did not handle that well.
I think you handled.it fine and it seems to have turned out fine.

You ask a lot of questions! I haven't given it that much thought!

I think the teacher could just stand outside the bathroom door. That would probably suffice. I would have scheduled breaks so students can't abuse it by asking for frequent breaks.

I had always assumed that his tactic was that by sending me back 2 grades, I would be the biggest kid in class rather than the smallest, so I would no longer be a bullying target, so it would make his life easier. But he's ignoring that I was already academically bored out of my mind, and sending me back 2 grades would have made me even more bored, and more likely to get in trouble in class.

The star program meant that each day, if you behaved, you got a star, and if you misbehaved, you got a black mark. Rather than the name, my problem with it was the fact that (as of the day after this incident), literally every boy in my class was on the star program, but not even 1 girl was on it.
He probably thought you were acting like a baby and wanted to highlight that by threatening to send you back to kndergarten. I am sure he never seriously considered actually doing that. It was just a tactic that apparently backfired and got you even more upset.

I cut a whole day in 12th grade, used a forged note and got away with it. It's ironic because I served a multitude of detentions that year for cutting various individual classes. Every time I cut a class, I got busted. Every. Single. Time. But when I cut the whole day, I got away with it. Fun stuff. I should have tried it more often. ... I thought I was being more cautious cutting one class at a time and I hoped to get away with that at least once just on principle.

I hold the distinction of being the first ever student from my high school ever suspended from summer school, way back in 1971. Seems they didn't appreciate me smoking in the restroom during a drivers ed break.

Although, since it got me upset, wasn't that what he was trying to do?
