I have been reading a lot in the news lately about kids (high school) being sent home or asked to change their clothes because they look "inappropriate" and/or "distracting". I am not a prude, but I do look at what these teenagers wear nowadays and just shake my head. Wouldn't just making school uniforms mandatory do away with all the uncertainties as far as dress codes go? For one, it would be much cheaper (for parents) considering they probably spend equal to or more for their teenagers clothes than say 4-5 sets of a school uniform.

Glad my kids went to Catholic school. This kind of distraction is not present, except perhaps on "dress down days".

When I was a kid, I went to prep school where we had a dress code (no jeans, no sneakers, collared shirts only).

If a kid or a parent feels "repressed" by a dress code then they have a screw loose.

Only thing I don't like about dresscode is that some schools are plain idiots and enforce leather shoes.
Leather shoes are very bad for kids knees....excessive wear would result in knee problems much later on in their lives.

they are sitting most of the day and it's not like they are wearing them 24/7 and jogging or running.

I had to wear leather shoes in school. Also wore them at work (loafers) and wear them in the winter.
I have no issues with my legs, knees or feet.

I have absolutely never heard this being an issue. Calling them idiots seems like hyperbole. Kids are sitting most of the day anyway.

Depends on the uniform. When I lived in Japan, a single cold-weather uniform cost $400-500, and you typically had to have more than one to send the other to cleaning. Depending on what the uniform requires- like a blazer/skirt, these are not going to be cheap. My nephew doesn’t have school uniforms but my sister buys him the uniform pants. Even they don’t last very long. The ones he has from last school year are like capris with holes in the knees even though she bought the reinforced knee style. Another negative is that they’re usually only available at the beginning of the school year, so if your kid grows out of them, then what?

Can't speak on the $400-500 uniform (are you sure you aren't exaggerating that price?). But for the bolded, they buy them some larger ones just like any other clothing item.

And for a $120 pair of Nikes, a parent could almost buy a (quality) uniform Polo shirt and good quality uniform khakis.

I don't have a problem with uniforms as long as all uniform options are available to all students regardless of gender.

My daughter had the option of a jumper or pants. My son had the option of shorts or pants.

It's enough options for anyone.

I am not buying into that. I wore leather shoes all my life, no problems. Proper fitting shoes with good arch support (regardless of material) and not being overweight is important.
