Public Policy Polling: Close Race in West Virginia

Manchin is one of the most popular governors in the nation, with a 59%-32% approval rating.

One would expect him to roll over an opponent for this seat.

What could be the problem?

Ahhhh...here it is;

Quote:
Barack Obama's approval rating in the state is just 30% with 64% of voters disapproving of him. Even within his own party barely half of voters, at 51%, like the job he's doing.

Given the President's high degree of unpopularity it's no surprise that 54% of voters in the state want Republicans to control the next Congress with just 37% wanting the Democrats to stay in charge.

It's the year and the anti incumbant bandwagon. Hubby and I were talking last night, yes, midterm in both Reagan and Clintons years both Pres had similar approval numbers as Obama, but I can never remember a time whenso many were so upset about so much. Usually it was one issue holding the numbers down, not every issue.

RealClearPolitics - Election 2010 - West Virginia Senate Special Election - Raese vs. Manchin

Raese up by 2 in this poll - trending toward the R.

I guess the people of WV have decided that no matter how much they like Manchin, they would rather not give obama and vote in the Senate.

Well it's hardly a huge lead but I am surprised its even close.Most people I know assumed manchin would have no trouble at all.I would likely vote for him if he ran for governor again.....but I can't see myself helping send any democrats to washington.I think this race,like many in the country this year,will hinge mainly on turnout and most of the republicans I know here in wva are anxious to vote while most of the dems I know seem disinterested.I think turnout will be very low....and very republican.

the issue here is that west virginia likes Manchin, but they don't want Harry Reid in charge of the Senate. Sometimes, all politics is not local.

Manchin will regret not simply appointing himself to the seat till the day he dies (oh hey David Paterson!)

Yes, I'm happy to see voters thinking that way. You aren't just voting for your guy, you are voting to change the majority so what you care about has a chance of happening.

If the local guys are conservative Democrats let them run for governor where they can still BE a conservative because when they go to capitol hill, they are just meat puppets of the "progressive" majority leaders no matter how conservative they really are.

You are correct. Manchin has been a rather good Governor for the state of WV and has maintained his centrist/right of center bend as Governor. Folks have seen Democrats go to Washington and turn their back on the voters due to being a freshman under pressure from the Reid / Pelosi machine.

I think this year more than any other, you will see "strategic" voting by the electorate.

YouTube - West Virginia IE AD: Stop Obama

Looks like another strategic vote by the electorate - this ad has it exactly right.

The dems thought this seat was a lock with Manchin running - look what's weighing him down;

Quote:
Manchin’s most obvious problem is Obama’s 29 percent approval rating in the state. Only 12 percent believe that Obama’s policies have helped the state economically, while 55 percent in the coal-rich state believe they have hurt.
