The Romney campaign has been accused of being stuck in the 1950s. But it also seems mired in the 1980s — it again invoked Cold War threats on Thursday, as it tried to attack the Obama administration on foreign policy.

Romney and his surrogates have revealed an ongoing Cold War fixation. Former Reagan Navy Secretary John Lehman and former Bush administration Ambassador Pierre Prosper, on Thursday derailed Romney messaging in a conference call with reporters by raising the specter of the “Soviet Union” and slamming Obama for not protecting Czechoslovakia — a country that was peacefully dissolved in 1993 and now exists as the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

The call was meant as a prebuttal to Vice President Biden’s foreign policy speech in New York Thursday, where he warned that Romney wants to return to a Bush-era foreign policy.

“He acts like he thinks the Cold War’s still on,” Biden said this month. “I don’t know where he’s been.”

Romney has not done much to burst that rhetorical balloon. After Biden’s remarks, Romney condemned Obama, but not without confusing modern-day Russia with the nation that came before it.

“Obama ‘entered into an agreement with the Soviets, excuse me, with Russia’ in the nuclear arms START treaty that effectively required the United States to reduce its weapons stockpile while allowing Russia to increase its stockpile,” Romney said on April 20.

“Everybody slips,” Biden said, but added that Romney’s mistake sounds like “a mindset.”

For their part, the Russians seem to find the whole thing rather amusing. After Romney called Russia America’s “No. 1 geopolitical foe,” Russian President Dimitri Medvedev joked, “[Romney needs to] look at his watch: We are in 2012 and not the mid-1970s.”

Nothing like being mocked by foreign leaders to inspire confidence in his ability to lead on a world stage.

I SAW that! That would be funnier than hell, if it wasn't so scary.

Not to worry, though. Romney DID say he would call Netanyahu BEFORE MAKING ANY DECISIONS CONCERNING ISRAEL, and get his OK first.

So I guess, between Romney licking Bibi's butt, and his foreign advisors not knowing what decade it is, things'll be fine ()

More than anything, it is Romney's lack of even the most rudimentary ability in foreign affairs that worries me about him. Americans underestimate our role in international affairs and rarely take it into consideration when voting. I saw where Romney has put pretty much the entire Bush brain trust on board as his foreign advisers. That is truly a frightening thought for those of us who have kids young enough to get caught up in yet another neocon/Republican war adventure. While it is discouraging to see how the Republicans want to slash and burn education, having the war-mongering neocons back is far more important, particularly when the President is so ignorant. People should justifiably fear for the lives of their children if Republicans take over again.

It is frightening that Romney is surrounding himself with a bunch of old men who are stuck in the last century to form his foreign policy. That quote from the Russian president, while funny, is actually an embarrassment for the U.S. This is a guy who is running for the leader of the free world, and he seems unaware that the Cold War is over.

It's interesting that there have been no Romney supporters commenting in this thread. I guess there's really no defense for a candidate who is so completely out of touch with what's happening outside the financial world. It's a real testament to what Romney cares about. I guess if it doesn't impact the bottom line, he's not interested.

i really don't think it matters much that the GOPers have put this stuffed shirt up for POTUS. He hasn't a chance of winning the election. There are a lot of really dumb Americans but there are also many who can't be fooled by the GOP crap. They haven't had a good idea since Ike and instead of going forward they all want to take the country back to the good old BAD days. In the entire western developed world there is just nothing like them anywhere. People are just too aware of who these "Economic royalists" represent and what the results of their policies have been everywhere they have been tried. FAILURE with a capital F. The American brand of this reactionary repulsive Republican is even worse than they are elsewhere, like Europe and Canada because they come with even more baggage. Their election almost guarantees more idiot foreign wars. They seem to have this delusion that the USA should control not only the USA and all of it's people but the rest of the world also. Look into the Project for a new American century, what their aims are and who are the movers and shakers in that CRIMINAL cabal. They had decided war with Iraq before W was even elected. Do you really want people like them deciding the future of your country? If you do then go ahead and elect the GOP to drag down the country even further.

It's a bad joke when the GOP points it's dirty finger at Obama and screeches about his lack of progress in 3 years. After the last 8 years of GOP neocon rule the country will be lucky to recover in 20 or 30 years if ever. Their policies destroyed the economy but at the same time was very very good for the 1%. Their policies have almost destroyed the military. It's exhausted and worn out after years of fighting useless and COSTLY wars. However corporate warmaking has had the best run since WW2. Because of GOP stupidity the gap between the working people and the "Royality" has greatly widened and accelerated. Social reforms that really have been the only redeeming policy in post WW2 American are increasingly under attack. Corporate and special interests rule the roost in large part and anyone who thinks that those interests line up with the public interest needs a brain transplant.

It's not possible for them to debate anything from a factual or logical basis. My goodness, when even their top notch people, the talking heads are completely without credibility why would you expect the run of the mill parrot to be able to put forth anything of substance at all?????

Mitt's foreign policy is my number one issue with him. His buttkissing of Netanyahu/Israel is just so obvious.
