Romney campaign senior adviser Ed Gillespie defended his candidate from attacks over the timing of his departure from Bain Capital during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday, saying Romney retired “retroactively” from the firm.
ie. Romney retired “after the fact” from the firm.
After which fact?
In 2002, Romney is listed as one of two managing members of Bain Capital Investors LLC in its annual report. Source
Perhaps he retroactively retired after this fact?
Sheesh how many sources have to tell you this is the case. He effectively retired in 1999 but not officially until 2002. Why are you having a tough time with this concept.

Their having a tough time because they lack the ability to comprehend how an owner of a company, can retire or leave, and collect an income for not being there.

The SEC might have a problem with that one, also. I think I'll wait until the indictment for perjury is handed down.

Look, the Bainers don't get, no matter how many times it is explained. He was CEO, President and Owner and had no operation involvement with Bain Capital. There is no requirement that any of those titles requires one to have an operational function in an organization. Bainers are so kooky.
"Responsibilities
The responsibilities of an organization's CEO (US) or MD (UK) are set by the organization's board of directors or other authority, depending on the organization's legal structure. They can be far-reaching or quite limited and are typically enshrined in a formal delegation of authority.
Typically, the CEO/MD has responsibilities as a communicator, decision maker, leader, and manager. The communicator role can involve the press and the rest of the outside world, as well as the organization's management and employees; the decision-making role involves high-level decisions about policy and strategy. As a leader, the CEO/MD advises the board of directors, motivates employees, and drives change within the organization. As a manager, the CEO/MD presides over the organization's day-to-day, month-to-month, and year-to-year operations.[2]"
Has Mitt said who was the acting CEO during his inactivity?

Romney obviously was actively involved, but knowing Romney, he will probably just name another Bain employee as acting CEO, retroactively.
