Romney seems to be advocating no changes for people in the system or approaching the age where they will enter the system, but big cutbacks for younger folks.
That's not going to work. Aside from touching off an inter-generational war, it's no more than a half-measure. If Medicare is to be patched up (Social Security is a separate matter), then everyone - in the program or not - will have to shoulder some of the burden.
He has to throw a bone to the teabaggers. Most of them are happily collecting their government handouts while screaming about the evils of socialism.
I'll soon be partaking of both of those sick programs. He is going down the right path. Do some serious surgery now, or the patient dies. If you catch my drift.
How do you think Romney will be able to explain that cuts are needed in Social Security and Medicare
at the same time he is planning to spend more money on defense and new tax cuts for the wealthy?
At some point he is going to have to explain why his tax plan which shifts more of the burden from
the rich and onto the middle class and poor and how cutting grandma's benefits to benefit the military
industrial complex is a good idea for anyone other than our corporate overlords.

He is right. As they currently exist, they are unsustainable.
The RESPONSIBLE thing to do is to modify the programs to insure that they persist. The childish, irresponsible thing to do is to continue as we are, drive the programs to insolvency, then kick the old folks to the curb in 2040.
Let us be practical and rational (not liberal)-
1. raise the eligibility age to 72- work is not a sin and Americans are living longer
2. raise requirements for social security disability- too many scammers
3. medicare changes-
a. only generic meds
b. terminate "invasive" treatment in patients over age 80 when mortality is 95%
c. no CABG or valvular surgery over age 90
d. no hip or knee arthroplasty over age 90
Be an adult- things have to change, otherwise the programs will collapse. Only a child would want to stick their head in the sand, ignore the problems, and wait for chaos to unfold. That "child" is the liberal "solution".

If the situation is so dire, why should people like you not have their benefits cut just like you are advocating for the younger people?
If there is one issue that can light a fire under some butts and bring out young people to vote for Obama, this is it. A lot of the members of Gen X and Gen Y already think that the baby boomers and their greed have left nothing but scorched earth for the younger generations. Cutbacks in government programs that only impact younger voters while baby boomers will continue to get their full size checks and keep their Bush era expanded Medicare coverage will bring this issue to a head.

I was in my early thirties the last time the SS age was raised, which included a similar ramp up time. It never occurred to me to whine about some oldster getting protected, while I didn't. Such cry babies.
I'll soon be the beneficiary of both of the sick programs. They need serious reform, and I expect that part of that reform will impact me and my wife. I'm ok with it, because it is what is smart and right thing to do.
Fools, it is not politics, its the money. As a nation, we do not have it.
Raising the retirement age will "awaken the giant"? Funny, when the age was raised several years ago on the producing generation (that would be us Baby Boomers) there was not really any protest. Who did protest was the generation born around 1910 when means testing was proposed.
If life expectancy has increased, which it did, then raising the retirement age makes some sense.
When was the last time FICA contributions were raised and on whom? Oh, that's right, the Baby Boomers. You know, the generation that has paid into Social Security their entire working lives and seen their contributions to it increase, then increase again, and then increase again. The generation that the current generation wants to throw under the bus, mainly because they don't seem to know, or even wish to know, how the system works.
Romney appears to have proposed means testing, isn't that what many of you want so the "1%" don't take advantage of the rest?
