Article in Buzzfeed says the Romney campaign has concluded that it's focus on economy and middle-class undecideds has failed. The campaign will now swing hard-right to make sure the base turns out.
The plan is to hammer Obama with Super PAC ads between now and election day, and for RYAN/romney to modify their stump speeches to emphasise God, guns, and gays (well, we'll see about gays-depends on how nasty they want to get )
The ads about the economy are supposed to be geared towards the middle class undecideds, Gurbie. It's everything but the ads that are supposed to be geared towards the base.
Three Obama advisers told BuzzFeed the campaign's top priority now is to rally liberal Democrats, in hopes that they'll show up on Election Day, and drag their less politically-engaged friends with them.

Hey, I saw that movie 4 years ago! Liked the ending, too.

"...a candidate who wants to talk about patriotism and God, and who is increasingly looking to connect with the right's intense, personal dislike for President Barack Obama."
Okey-dokey, so I guess that means now were gonna hear a lot more about the "welfare President", the "uppity Kenyan", "crime", "affirmative action", "states rights", "Chicago thugs", "guvmint handouts", etc.... and all the other socially acceptable ways of saying ‘Don’t vote for the black guy’!
With all the enormous amount of money both sides have spent on advertising, there has been very little movement in either direction for either candidate. The Republicans have spent about $35,000,0000 so far in Florida and the ads haven't changed much at all.
I have believed for a while that both parties continuing to dump major money into TV ads is nothing but a waste. It's pretty apparent that almost all minds are made up for one person or the other in this election.
Both parties, I think, could better spend their money on getting out the vote efforts. The only way one candidate is going to really pull ahead of the other is to motivate and capture a bunch of brand new voters who have never registered before or participated in the system at all.
It's entertaining that they think despite the hundreds of millions spend so far in negative Obama ads, new ones will suddenly work. But, really, I doubt they do. They're just trying to rally the base to prevent a complete collapse of the campaign and base support.
Obama has been President for four years and opinions of him are fixed; a bunch of TV commercials aren't going to change that, no matter how much some people might click their heels and really, really, really wish it so.
Weak strategy when going up against a likeable incumbent.
