The new normal each election cycle seems to be that the GOP throws away two or three completely winnable seats by nominating some idiotic Tea Partier who makes the critical mistake of saying something.

Two years ago it was Sharon Angle and Christine O'Donnell, blowing two races that the GOP should have won hands down.

This year it's Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock, blowing two more races. Not to mention Maine, where the mere specter of a Tea Party primary challenge convinced Olympia Snowe to retire, and she'll be replaced by independent Angus King, who will caucus with the Democrats.

Anyway, back to Indiana:
Howey Politics Indiana - Indianapolis, Indiana

Joe Donnelly - 47%
Richard Mourdock - 36%

I agree - and since the Murdock-Akin variety of looney is as common as grass in the House, the '14 midterm should raise the average by quite a bit, with House races in closer focus. People were in the habit of calling the Republicans the Party of Nope, but I think I'll start spelling that NOP: Nutty Old Party.

Most moderate republicans agree with you. Those two yo-yos are a disgrace. Akins should have resigned while there was time, they did try to make him. Democrats have their idiots too, just this election cycle the republicans seem to be winning the "wish he hadn't won the primary" race.

There's dems like that too. I am disgusted with my Rep, a Mr. Raul Grijalva, who angered over the SB1070, urged people to boycott his own state thus costing his constituents dozens and dozens of jobs in the hospitality industry. Unfortunately, the Reps ran a tea party guy against him, so I just wrote in my own name for that slot on my ballot this year.

Akin and Mourdock = what the Republican Party has become. Extremists. The "American Taliban."

More rubbish from you. Mainstream GOP is nothing like that and you know it. And don't pretend like there are no crazies in the Democratic party as well.

Lamentably, Mourdock ousted Lugar. Republicans loved to deride him as a RINO, but in fact he supported his party the vast majority of the time. However, he did so without the lunacy (birth certificate nuttery, insinuation that Obama is somehow 'foreign', and so forth). Herefused to wallow in that cesspool, and so was driven out.

I'd be fine with Lugar still in the Senate. His expertise is arms control, a policy which transcends party lines. Maybe he'll find a position somewhere in the Obama Administration.

What's sad is that you have a lot including a lot of women in Indiana that agree with him. He just rolled out an ad featuring children of rape (all women of course) to make his case and state his words are being misinterpreted even though the words used are verbatim.

The Tea Party which has taken over a large chunk of the GOP is now nothing but the religious far right hiding under the facade of fiscal conservatism. So they will keep putting up these fringe loons who open their mouths and hand over hard core red senate seats to democrats.

The Sharon Angle's and Christine O'donnell's do on occasion get the nomination and lose because people overall consider them too extreme.

Unfortunately those equally as inept and extreme get made speaker of the House on the Dems side.
