Let's put aside the stupid sex controversy and the fact that he isn't a natural born U.S. citizen for a minute. Would you have voted someone like Schwarzenegger as Republican nominee for president?
He's a politically moderate Republican.
He was elected for two terms in a very liberal State.
He worked towards bipartisan aims and was willing to do politically suicidal things to try and balance the budget.
He operated like a technocrat..someone who put more weight in actual stats, facts, and figures and working towards efficiency.
He was socially moderate leaning liberal.
There's a lot more issues he dealt with that are too complicated to get into here but he seemed to do OK as a moderate Republican. I'm honestly not sure if I would vote for him against Obama but I would seriously consider it if he was eligible because he's very moderate.
