Journalists and pollsters both sometimes ask a "trick" or a baseline type question in an interview to see if the person being interviewed has any clue about what they're talking about, because people DO BS and pretend to know things all the time. If they can't answer the question correctly, you know the rest is pointless. Its one way to measure the credibility of the person you're interviewing if it hasn't been established through other sources. There was nothing unethical or silly about PPP asking the ACORN question this round.
So then, after the credibility of the respondent has been impugned, wouldn't it follow that this respondent should be removed from the sample? What value is there in polling people who clearly know nothing of what they speak?

PPP leans left, they used to work for the Daily KOS for crying out loud. Their motivation is to illustrate that only a loon would vote against Barack Obama.
PPP was also the most accurate national poll in the election. Perhaps they should have "unskewed" this poll?

Um, no. Just no.
You might do that if the idea was to get a picture of what non-clueless people think. But you certainly wouldn't remove them from the sample and then try to claim that what you've done is representative of the whole population.
What's the value? Last I checked, people who are completely clueless are still allowed to vote, write their congressman, etc. Heck, sometimes they even run for office and get elected (see the crazed conspiracy theorizing about vaccines and autism from this week: Congress hearing on vaccines is a farce of dangerous antivax nonsense. ).

Like I said. The poll question is included to show that the people who didn't vote the correct way were clueless.

I agree with you. Does anyone really think that with all the money and political influence at stake, that ACORN was really disbanded (as opposed to just being reorganized)?
