I am an American! Just like Mike Huckabee; just like Fred Thompson; but not like Mitt Romney; not like Bill Clinton; not like John McClain; nor Rudy Giuliani.

I was born to poor share-croppers, independently struggling to make it on their own shortly after the greatest generation had assured the American dream for all. I don't and didn't know the pain of being born rich; nor like Bill Clinton, never knowing my real father because of a car wreck; I didn't know the military brat's lifestyle of John McClain, nor his painful internment as a tortured POW. I, didn't know Rudy's city-boy childhood, either. I do know from where Mike Huckabee comes from, and I don't yet know if I will support him.

Please don't insult me by telling me what you can do for me as President, because I only want you to do one thing really. I just want to make certain that my children and grandchildren get the same opportunities to achieve as I did by you living up to your oath of office. Protect America from all enemies, foreign and domestic! Don't tell me that what is good for Portland Maine is equally good for Portland Oregon. Defend me, expect me to pay my share in time and money, but don't put your philosphies on me in a shaming way.

LuAnn, I am a jerk! Never doubt it. If what you feel compares me to being a jerk, then I'll gladly take my apple pie, cracker jacks, barbeque, even a basketball game, and I'll go be silly with my happiness. Unlike people such as you appear to be, I'll even share my pride and joy so you can pretend.

I respect what people did and continue to do for me. I am so sorry that you must have been so deprived of the great opportunities unselfish people gave to all of us.

We have no rights simply because we are Americans, we must remain diligent. Our greatest enemy is the one that control our knowledge.

It's impossible to state how important this is. This is why keeping the internet free and unfettered for adults is essential. We know we can't trust the media outlets to tell us the truth.

Tomocox-great post. We are at the point in life where the most important thing is insuring the safety, future growth and prosperity for our children and 6 grandchildren. That's our major concern.

I don't think LuAnn was calling you a jerk, I think it was just that the beginning of the post was reminiscent of the movie. That was the first thing I thought of too! I love that movie!

Yes, the greatest enemy is one that attempts to control knowledge. To me, this is manifest in the churches that try to tell people what they shouldn't read or watch (the recent flap over The Golden Compass comes to mind). I can't imagine being told I was going to go to hell for questioning. Good original post!

P.S.

And Stop allowing all of our manufacturing base to leave the country! And do something about healthcare so businesses stay in America and so people can afford health care. And make some policy choices to fix the recession we are nosediving into! And stop allowing colleges to raise pricing double inflation every year so I can afford to send my kids to get the damn peice of paper so they can get a decent job later! And get our troops to stop playing policemen babysitting tribes that hate each other in an endless War, please and bring them home to their families...

Thank you, Mr./Ms. President!!

We better start defending the internet now because HR 1955 (GovTrack: H.R. 1955: Text of Legislation) is going to control the internet and destroy the last bit of freedom for knowledge exchange we have left.

One of the bills findings:

(3) The Internet has aided in facilitating violent radicalization, ideologically based violence, and the homegrown terrorism process in the United States by providing access to broad and constant streams of terrorist-related propaganda to United States citizens.

But we're all just cranks for talking about this, right?
