HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) — Donald Trump's chief lieutenants told skeptical Republican leaders Thursday that the GOP front-runner has been "projecting an image" so far in the 2016 primary season and "the part that he's been playing is now evolving" in a way that will improve his standing among general election voters.
The message, delivered behind closed doors in a private briefing, is part of the campaign's intensifying effort to convince party leaders Trump will moderate his tone in the coming months to help deliver big electoral gains this fall, despite his contentious ways.
Trump's newly hired senior aide, Paul Manafort, made the case to Republican National Committee members that Trump has two personalities: one in private and one onstage.
"When he's out on the stage, when he's talking about the kinds of things he's talking about on the stump, he's projecting an image that's for that purpose," Manafort said in a private briefing.
What happens to the 'he says what we think' and 'tells it like it is'? Is that going away? I suspect a lot of his followers will be terribly disappointed when they discover that he is basically a politician after all.

The mere mention of two personalities will hardly prove to be reassuring to either power brokers or voters in November. Does that type of defense represent the best that Paul Manafort could come up with? Weak and lame ... plus a cause for concern. Trump is what he is and with the age of 70 approximately seven weeks away, this subject will be pounded on throughout the spring and summer.
People do not change and hired guns will throw anything into the mix to see if it sticks.
I really, really enjoy that this newest mouthpiece is just matter-of-factly saying, "Psych! He's been lying this whole time and pulling the wool over everyone's eyes so he could fool the stupid people into voting for him," without being worried in the least that he's insulting Trump's supporters. That is just too amazing. Guess it falls under the shooting someone on 5th Avenue category.

Nah, folks will just say it makes him a brilliant strategist and "See, there's no reason to be scared of him! He'll make America great again!"
Then they'll be surprised and angry if he's elected and starts backtracking on the stuff they really wanted him to do.
But those tax cuts for the mega rich? Those will get done LOL.
ETA: I forgot, the other reasoning will be "see he's telling the party leaders what they want to hear so they give him the nomination but he'll forget about them once elected".
Basically, his campaign just admitted that his on stage persona is all an act to hoodwink the rubes. And once he locks up all those idiots' votes he will pivot to become more establishment, like the GOP wants him to.
All that talk about how anti-establishment he is, how he is an outsider, how he's not beholden to anyone, not a tool of any political party, yet his campaign has gone, hat in hand, to the RNC to assure them they have nothing to worry about. Once he's the nominee he will leave his flamboyant, non-PC, "tell it like it is" stage personality--the very stuff that his supporters love most about him--behind and become a good little GOP team player.
And yet we hear nary a word from his more ardent supporters regarding this revelation. Maybe they're feeling every bit the rube that Trump pegged them to be and are too embarrassed to comment after being so thoroughly hoodwinked?
Or more likely, they will simply pretend they never heard this and continue to arduously support the phony that Trump pretends to be.
Trump certainly is living proof of the adage, there's a sucker born every minute. He knows his supporters well.

Agreed. So, which is Trump? A psychologically disturbed individual with a personality disorder or just an out-and-old liar and con man? I can't see most American voters wanting either one sitting in the Oval Office or holding the key to the US' nuclear arsenal.
