Just when you think this election could not get more bizarre,

Quote:
A delegate to the Republican national convention from Virginia filed a federal lawsuit Friday to avoid being bound to vote for Donald Trump on the first ballot in Cleveland.

The delegate, Carroll Boston Correll, is a longtime local GOP official who claims Trump is "unfit to serve" as President. Correll alleges in the lawsuit that state law which binds him to vote for Trump on the first ballot at the convention violates his constitutional right to free speech. Correll is seeking class action status for the suit on behalf of other bound delegates in Virginia, where Trump won 17 delegates in March.

The lawsuit was filed Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. It list as its defendants Mark Herring, the attorney general of Virginia, and other state and local elections officials. Correll is being represented by a major D.C. law firm, BakerHostetler.

"Correll believes that Donald Trump is unfit to serve as President of the United States and that voting for Donald Trump would therefore violate Correll’s conscience," the complaint said. "Accordingly, Correll will not vote for Donald Trump on the first ballot, or any other ballot, at the national convention. He will cast his vote on the first ballot, and on any additional ballots, for a candidate whom he believes is fit to serve as President, thereby violating Section 545(D)."

Correll is seeking an injunction that would relieve him of any criminal penalties under state law for voting for someone other than the primary winner on the first ballot at a national convention. The lawsuit notes that in Virginia, delegates are not chosen directly by the voters according to whom they will support, but rather in separate local party conventions.

Trump seems confident of his victory. He could prove he is the candidate Republicans really want by releasing all of his delegates in all the states to vote their conscience.

Ronald Reagan had the same problem in 1980. People said, he was crazy, WW3 would start.

1 delegate?????? LMAO!!!!

So we should abolish the GOP PRIMARIES and the people's will and just have the delegates vote their conscience (cough, cough, establishment and special interests)

He already proved his victory....he beat 16 candidates and got the most votes in GOP primary history by the people.

First they were saying if Trump didn't make it to 1,237 in the 1st round that the delegates could vote anyway they want after the 1st round and were hoping for a brokered convention......then after he makes it and passes 1,237 easily and beat everybody in the field now the new rule is Trump must release his delegates so they can vote their conscience because you didn't like the results.

what a joke!

The delegates should do what Congress does when they don't want to vote on something that is disagreeable for them either way they vote... skip the first vote. Don't be in the convention hall when it is time for the vote.

If enough of them are 'missing' from the first vote, then trump won't actually receive the number of votes on the first vote, and there would be a second vote. Problem solved.

So funny - I met a long time republican today, who was wearing a "Free The Delegates" tee shirt. She is actively campaigning to get rid of trump. Clearly, will forego voting rather than vote for him. She is a history teacher - believes he is the worst thing to happen to American politics since the Teapot Dome. Considering that a lot of really bad things have happened in politics since then, that is saying something.

I have heard such state laws are unconstitutional. There is no federal law requiring delegates to be bound.

They prob don't care, but if they're able to unseat Trump as the nominee, I swear I've never vote again.
