Even $0 if he gets away with it. There is no civic duty to pay more in taxes than you are legally required, and anyone on this message board would do the exact same thing in his shoes.

I have never heard of anyone bragging about how much tax they pay. Maybe some people do but none that I have met. I do remember people talking about how they got out of paying taxes in legal and non legal ways.

We know that anyone will pay has less taxes as legally possible. This is not really the issue. What comes into question is that the rich pay the majority of taxes. Many folks will find it difficult to reconcile this different. The fact that Trump wants to cut taxes for the same folks makes the BS meter move even further. I am not defending either side but it does raise questions.

Speak for yourself. As a Christian, to me paying taxes is a way of loving my neighbor. It's my personal contribution to make sure that children get schooling, that the elderly are cared for etc.

The issue is NOT "whether or not one has a civic duty to pay more (or even 'their fair share') in taxes". The issue is whether or not Trump actually has the INTERESTS of the AMERICAN PEOPLE in mind - or whether he's simply out to use the office of President to further his personal business interests and increase his personal wealth. The fact is, Trump has a history of enriching HIMSELF at the expense (often very unfairly) of others (often "little people") - sometimes through some pretty dubious legal or semi-legal actions. He even seems to have used his "charity" to simply pay his company bills using other peoples money rather than using it as a real charity - a practice that MAY be "smart" but it's not really ethical and may not even be LEGAL.

So, with a strong history of putting himself before EVERYONE ELSE, why should we expect that he's suddenly going to use the office of President to help the AMERICAN PEOPLE rather than simply HIMSELF?

Ken

I have no problem paying my taxes, and always play by the rules. I suspect I'm not alone.

I personally took steps around the turn of the century to organize my financial life such that I paid the absolute minimum, at most. Of course, on a smaller scale than Mr Trump.

Still, his point of the federal government "squandering" tax dollars is 100% correct.

I have no, none, zilch obligation to support others via government priorities. My church and other charitable giving is where I decide what and whom has value.

Tax laws were written to be interpreted and followed. What's the issue?

Wrong. You have the legal obligation to pay the taxes required of you.

If you don't, you can be jailed, your wages, benefits and investments can all be garnished, you can lose your job, you can even be deported if not a citizen.

There is no point to even having a country if the country can't require anything of its citizens.

Trump did not make the laws, he just follows them. Everyone screaming how he is cutting taxes for the wealthy and in the next breath say the wealthy gets out of paying taxes due to loopholes. So what difference does it make? If they pay no taxes anyway due to loopholes who cares if the percentage they do not pay anyway goes down? 30% of 0 = 0 and 60% of 0=0.
