Trump, as well as many Trump voters like my older brother and sister who are NOT on social media/political forums/ and has no idea what a "meme" even is, would be completely clueless why some on the left would go berzerko over Bannon. Ha ha... who knows if Trump is even remotely aware of the optics himself over his choice? I'm sure he sees Bannon as "effective" and that's all he cares about which I think is fair.
However, the "snowflakes" will be using this as ammunition and resist any attempts by Trump to patch up any divisions. I'm not by any means suggesting he needs to compromise or pander to the left, but appointing Bannon, in a practical sense will make the leaders of the Trump "resistance" overjoyed with glee because this further "confirms in their minds" that hysteria is justified.
I've often defended Trump and his supporters, and spent quite some time just last night with my Jewish friend assuring her she has nothing to fear. I still believe this is so, but appointing Bannon to such an important position troubles me, and add more fuel to the fire I believe.
IMO, reassuring your friend was a wise move. Bannon will have tremendous influence, but he isn't family. Trump's son-in-law Jared is a Jewish man. Trump's daughter Ivanka, who by many accounts (including those of her brothers) is the favorite, has been reported to have an almost svengali like effect on her father. Ivanka converted to Judaism in order to marry Jared. Their children, the president-elect's grandchildren, are Jewish.
P.S. --- Oh well. While I was composing this post another person beat me to it and you replied....which I didn't see until after my post hit. At least you know that multiple people are aware of the same thing you did point out to your friend.

Eric Trump's wife Lara is Jewish, too. So Eric's kids will also be Jewish. Trump will have many Jewish family members.
If you don't know who Steve Bannon is you owe it yourself to find out about him. He is a leader of the alt right and his goal is to take over the Republican party.

I am sure that Bannon has good intentions and if he does not work out for Donald, he will remove him.
