CNN Political Ticker: All politics, all the time - Blogs from CNN.com

Some highlights:
WASHINGTON (AP) — John McCain has called off a fundraiser at the home of a Texas oilman who joked about rape during a 1990 gubernatorial run in the state.

The Texan, Republican Clayton Williams, made the joke during his failed campaign against Democrat Ann Richards. Williams compared rape to the weather, saying, "As long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it."

He also compared Richards to the cattle on his ranch, saying he would "head her and hoof her and drag her through the dirt."

The campaign said it would not return money Williams had raised for McCain because the contributions came from other individuals supporting McCain and not from Williams. Williams told his hometown newspaper, the Midland Reporter-Telegram, that he had raised more than $300,000 for McCain.

Democrats said McCain should give back the money: "Senator McCain's claim of ignorance is no excuse for refusing to do the right thing now. Offensive, disgusting comments like these cannot be tolerated," Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Karen Finney said.

The flap comes as McCain's campaign reaches out to women and to backers of Democrat Hillary Clinton. McCain began a women-focused outreach effort in recent days, sending a well-known female supporter, former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, to campaign in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

I suspect other people in the campaign will steer him to giving the money back.

I really can't understand it. I mean give the money back and let people debate if you should have known or not but geeez give the money back and don't give your critics anything to grab a hold of.

To avoid being further exposed as a total fraud, McCain should take that $300,000 and donate it to a violence against women center or some other similar organization. I don't see why anyone should have an argument with that.

Works with me and might be better then giving it back. The only question would the contributors go along with it. They gave for a specific purpose and may or may not agree with the cause he gives it to.

Update on the topic, if he won't listen to his advisors maybe the Dem's can convince him to give the money back.

Dems badger McCain on money - Mike Allen - Politico.com

The Democratic National Committee on Saturday called for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) to return money raised for his campaign by controversial Texas Republican Clayton “Claytie” Williams Jr.

ABC News reported Friday night that the McCain campaign canceled a Monday fundraiser at Williams’ home after the campaign was reminded of a comment he made that drew fire when he ran unsuccessfully for Texas governor in 1990 against the late Ann Richards.

That would be a great solution. Let’s keep track of this and see what happens. Sadly, the odds are McCain will just pocket the money.
