In an interview with Pittsburgh, Pa station KDKA earlier this week McCain had this to say:
Quote:
"When I was first interrogated and really had to give some information and because of the physical pressures that were on me, I named the starting lineup-defensive line- of the Pittsburgh Steelers as my squadron mates"
However, in his autobiography, Faith of My Fathers, McCain told the same story, only slightly differently:
Quote:
Eventually, I gave them my ship's name and squadron number, and confirmed that my target had been the power plant. Pressed for more useful information, I gave the names of the Green Bay Packers' offensive line, and said they were members of my squadron.
Looks like McCain was straight out lying in an attempt to curry favor with Steeler fans.
Now that's a story you'd want to keep inviolate & make a legend, even if you did name the commie Packers as your squadron. Either way he looks bad though. Alzheimer moment or craven pandering moment?
I have never figured out how crashing planes and getting captured makes one a "military hero". When I was there, crashing planes would have got you booted out!
Ah, as much as I can't stand McCain, I can't fault him for this. This is just cheap politicizing that everyone does -- trying to look cute and always coming off as akward. In reality, McCain probably couldn't name one offensive lineman from either city. Max... Starks... who?
And no, he didn't mis-speak -- it's called politics. It's lame, it's cheap, it's fake -- it's what we all love in America!
The only problem I have with his obvious lie is that he's attempting to recall a moment in history -- you shouldn't be lying about something like that -- what else are you lying about as you hammer us over the head with historical references to your capture? It's not a good idea.

Yeah! Your story should be legend by now. The Packers (or the Steelers, or the Phillies or whoever) should invite you out every twenty years or so to be...Queen of the May or whatever an honored guest would be, and your heroic story repeated over and over through the generations. We should all know this story by now, in fact. There should have been a movie even.
Where are his Rovian handlers? They dont seem too interested in Johnny Mac. Maybe Cindy's American Express is maxed this month.

I don't think Cindy's American Express can get maxed out, she's been known to charge as much as $500,000 in a single month on it. That, and husband John's lies outlined in the OP demonstrate they both have distinct character flaws.

I can't believe he didn't realize people would catch him on this. A piquant mix of lying AND Forgetful Senior Moment.
