Excuse my ignorance but I'd like to know something...

How does the system work - if McCain were to have another heart problem and become incapacitated between now and the election, would Palin automatically take his place?

If not her, then who would be the most likely replacement....?

thanks

I think if he dropped dead tomorrow, there'd be a stampede away from Palin. No one-- not even the extreme right-- thinks she's ready to run for President now. VP is "safe," but she's not ready for the big show.

Someone (a man) would bravely step forward/be drafted to run. Whether or not they'd keep Palin would depend on whatever was deemed the best strategy to win. If they decided to ditch her as VP, it would be touted as being out of deference to the new candidate being able to make his own choice for his right hand.

God forbid. That would allow George Bush to run again.

Any likely new candidates?

PS I know this is all hypothetical - but it's quite possible, given the state of McCain's health.

Pardon my ignorance once again - I'm from the UK! But living in USA, so very interested.

So...if the Republican nominee were to die tomorrow, then the current President could run again, despite having served two terms already...?

If you can bear to explain I'd be grateful. Thanks
